Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo is this week's Staff Picks Spotlight. Leigh Bardugo made her mark writing bestselling young adult fantasy, but now she’s doing something a little different with Ninth House. Her first adult novel Bardugo uses Yale’s secret societies (their hidden rituals and the power of membership) to create the perfect setting for a story where elitism and the occult are intertwined. In Ninth House we meet Alex Stern, a young woman with nothing left to lose, who... is given a strange second chance at a different life as a freshman at Yale. The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes is this week's Staff Picks spotlight. Based on a true story rooted in America’s past. Set in a small Kentucky town in Depression-era America, the novel details the lives of five women who become traveling librarians, delivering books to the people of Kentucky. The story follows Alice Wright, a British woman, who moves after marrying the Kentucky native Bennett Van Cleve.... The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking and enthralling, it is destined to become a modern classic and a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship and true love. Staff recommend this book to groups. This afternoon, we were treated to a fascinating Zoom program by history lecturer, tour guide and reenactor, Michael Jesberger. Michael's narrative truly made history come to life. With the aid of a picturesque slideshow and the use of historic maps, he vividly described what Christmas was like in the 18th century as he retold the events leading up to General Washington and his army crossing the Delaware river. We learned the significance of the battle of Trenton in a way that made that moment back in time feel real and moving. Our thanks to Michael, and to the Friends whose sponsorship make programs like this possible. Colonial Christmas: Winter with Washington's Army was a tour de force!
