The "Public Charge Rule" expanded the authority of officials to deny green cards to immigrants who might need public assistance, causing many undocumented immigrants to shy away from using benefits their children might be eligible for, such as Medicaid and food stamps. Although there is a preliminary injunction against Public Charge in place, it could take a long time to recover from the fear and confusion the rule has fostered in immigrant communities.
