Elizabeth Price Martin was the first chairwoman of the Committee of 1926, the group of women that steward Historic Strawberry Mansion. She led the Committee during the restoration of HSM and was instrumental in its early success. In addition to Strawberry Mansion, she served as president of Emergency Aid of PA during World War I, co-founded the Garden Clubs of America, and helped restore both Stenton and Bartram's Garden. Upon her death in 1932, the Emergency Aid of PA wrote...: "In the death of Elizabeth Price Martin, the Emergency Aid of Pennsylvania has lost a leader...Her boundless energy and her capacity for accomplishment were united in her character with the most extreme modesty...She brought into the lives of those about her and who were working with her, a vision and inspiration which can never be forgotten, and she was to each of her associates a generous and devoted friend." #womenshistorymonth #historicstrawberrymansion #phillyhistory

Today in History- 1931 and 1780 two very important dates for Historic Strawberry Mansion and its previous owners. 90 years ago, on March 1, 1931, we opened our doors as a house museum beginning nine decades of sharing the house and its history with the public. Including the history of the first owner, Judge William Lewis, who drafted "An Act for the Gradual Abolition of Slavery", which was passed into law on March 1, 1780. It was the first pro-abolition bill introduced in any state in the Union!
