WHAT IS COAL TAR? Coal tar is similar in appearance to asphalt but is produced as a byproduct of bituminous coal during the production of metallurgical coke. Coal tar can be made into an emulsion comparable to asphalt emulsion and applied to asphalt pavement surfaces. Coal tars are used as a surface treatment on roads, driveways, parking lots, gas stations, and airport taxiways. Advantages Unlike asphalt cement, coal tar is resistant to damage from gasoline, diesel, oil, sa...lt, and chemicals. Disadvantages Coal tar generally costs more than asphalt cement.
