E A R N E S T M O N E Y This term is also known as hand money, initial deposit or escrow deposit. It is typically between 1% and 5% of the purchase price, but that amount can vary. When submitting a sales agreement (offer), the buyer decides an amount to pay. Once a deal is under agreement, the earnest money is due within a timeframe agreed upon (typically 5 days). Is it required? Technically, no. It is very rare that a seller will accept an offer without a good fai...th deposit. Is it refundable? Yes. There are many contingencies that can be worked out and used to protect you and your deposit. Where does it go? The amount gets deposited into an escrow account. If the deal reaches the closing table, it will be applied to the buyer’s down payment or closing costs.
