Huntingdon County Historical Society 21.04.2021

Today is International Women's Day! Meet Clara McMurtrie, one of the Founding Members of the Huntingdon County Historical Society. She was born on February 7, ...1860 and died on September 16, 1952. She attended a private school in Huntingdon and then went to Wilson College. She return home to Huntingdon after one year to take care of her sister. She never married. Throughout her life, she traveled extensively and in 1905 went on a trip around the world. She donated the structures and property that today house the Huntingdon County Library and the Huntingdon County Historical Society. #InternationalWomensDay March is also #WomenHistoryMonth

We greatly appreciate all the help and submissions in our effort to document all of our memorials, monuments, historical markers/plaques/signs in Huntingdon County! Standing Stone Garden Club Member Susan Wilson decorated the Little House for Christmas Thursday afternoon at the Huntingdon County Historical Society in Huntingdon. The Garden Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a federated garden club and invites everyone to visit the garden area decorations throughout the month of December.

On this day In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing all American women’s right to vote, was ratified as Tennessee became the 36th state to approve it. Tonight we held our Annual Meeting for the Huntingdon County Historical Society. We held election of members to the board, got an update of the society and heard updates from other historical organizations from around the county from those that were represented. Our President Fred R. Lang presented to the society this beautiful portrait he painted of Miss Clara McMurtrie, one of the founders of the Huntingdon County Historical Society. Miss Clara passed away in 1952 and lef...t her childhood home to the HCHS to set up a research library, archives and museum. They are doing what is required and what is best to keep everyone safe and healthy. Huntingdon County Historical Society - Wednesday’s by appointment 10am - 4pm or other days by appointment. Swigart Museum - Every day of the week 10am - 5pm on Saturday’s museum 9am - 5pm and Kars & Koffee by Raystown Kruisers 8am - 11am. Isett Heritage Museum - Monday thru Saturday 8am - 5pm Sunday 12pm - 5pm Hartslog Heritage Museum - by appointment. Three Springs/Saltillo area Historical Society - Tuesday’s 1pm - 4pm or by appointment.
