April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Here are some of the signs of child abuse and neglect and what you can do if you suspect that your child has suffered from abuse. "It is not always easy to recognize when a child has been abused. Children who have been maltreated are often afraid to tell anyone, because they think they will be blamed or that no one will believe them. Sometimes they remain quiet because the person who abused them is someone they love very much, ...or because of fear, or both. Parents also tend to overlook signs and symptoms of abuse, because it is hard to believe it could happen or they fear what might happen if people found out. However, a child who has been abused needs special support and treatment as early as possible. The longer children continue to be abused or are left to deal with the situation on their own, the harder it is for them to be able to heal and develop optimally physically and mentally." #pediatrics #pediatrician #healthychildren #NCAPM
Watching TV with your tween or teen not only creates bonding opportunities with your kid but also gives you a chance to discuss any content that might be complex and get your kid to open up to you. "As our kids hit middle school, they frequently start confiding in us less. Just when identity issues, friendship dramas and peer pressure are becoming more intense. Television programs and other forms of media are often influential at this age. When Dr. Steiner-Adair’s own daught...er was in middle school they watched the Canadian show Degrassi High together. It became an opportunity to talk about all kinds of teenage issues that wouldn’t necessarily come up organically." #pediatrics #pediatrician #parentingtips
Button battery injuries affect thousands of children each year. Follow the tips in this article to keep your kids safe from button batteries and info on how to get your kid treated if they ingested a button battery. "Parents and caregivers need to be aware of the risk posed by button batteries in their home. Keep loose and spare batteries locked away, store any product that uses button batteries out of reach of curious children, and know what to do if they do manage to ingest one. Talk with you pediatrician if you have any questions about your child's safety." #pediatrics #pediatrician #buttonbattery #parentingtips #healthychildren
