Here's one simple language shift that can promote ownership, autonomy, and empowerment: shifting "if" to "when." Transitions are hard. It's hard for tiny human...s to shift gears. The act of transitioning requires them to stop something that they are engaged in, and move into an activity that they maybe don't love (putting on shoes, picking up, or sitting in a chair). A small shift in how we frame these moments can have huge impact. Rather than framing it negatively, or like a threat, we can let them know that they have ownership in that moment, they have autonomy, and we are there to encourage them as they move through that transition. But what do I do if we're on a timeline? If you're on a timeline, a visual aid, like a visual timer can support your kiddo in knowing what that timeline expectation is: "I'm going to set the timer for two minutes, when it goes off I'll lift you into your seat, or you can get in yourself before it goes off." The expectation is communicated clearly and they still have autonomy and ownership. They can choose whether or not they do it within that timeframe and if they don't you can help them. Many events continue to be cancelled due to safety concerns during the Covid-19 pandemic. Family Fun Fest was scheduled for March 27, 2021, however, as of now ...it will NOT be a live event at the Indiana Mall. The planning committee is considering alternative date(s) or a virtual event.
