It was late July when 20-year-old Zoey Albertson thought she was experiencing some allergies, which for her was a runny nose and a bit of a sore throat that she... didn’t think much of. Zoey scheduled a test and soon found out she was positive for COVID-19. More symptoms started to develop as the days went by. The day I was tested I had a cough and then I realized I couldn’t taste or smell, said Zoey. Almost five months have passed since Zoey received her diagnosis, and she still has not regained her sense of taste or smell. It has negatively affected me every day, said Zoey. Her experience has also impacted conversations with her peers. I have started to express more how COVID impacts people my age. I know my friends aren’t worried about getting the virus because they have a better chance of getting through it than their elders. I share with them that I still don’t have my sense of taste or smell back and how this can negatively affect you whether you are 20 or 70, said Zoey. Zoey has noticed that some individuals have become lackadaisical about wearing a mask. Sometimes people will walk around and hold their drink just to keep their mask down. I will ask them to put their mask on unless they are taking a sip of their drink, she said. Think about your family and not just yourself when you are following these guidelines and remember that your actions can have consequences beyond yourself, said Zoey.
