Although President George Washington is best known for being our first American President, he was also a land surveyor and soldier. Washington was also a very astute map maker, using his skills as a land surveyor for precision mapping.

During a topographic survey, our surveyors note features such as land elevations, embankments, contours, watercourses, roads, and ditches. Topographic surveys are often useful in conjunction with location surveys to prepare a site design map.

A Gunter's Chain is the granddaddy of all surveying equipment. It was invented by Edmund Gunter in 1620 and is made up of 100 standard links that total 66 feet. The chain and links themselves eventually became units of measurement.

Appraisal reports consist of four parts, including the Introduction, Factual Data, Analysis and Conclusions, and Addenda. The Introduction states the purpose and function of appraisal, identifies and describes the subject property, and states the value conclusion.

In England, surveying techniques and tools developed around the central principle of sight lines. In colonial America, these surveying methods were less useful, particularly in the heavily forested wilderness regions found by early explorers and adventurers.
