Today in music history: January 23, 1964 The Way You Do The Things You Do by The Temptations is released. Written by William Smokey Robinson and Robert Bobby Rogers, it is the first major hit for the legendary Motown vocal quintet. Originally signed to Motown Records in 1961, The Temptations initially get off to a slow start when they begin recording for the label. By 1963, the group have released nearly a half a dozen singles on Motown with little to show for it. Only... Dream Come True has made any impact, peaking at #22 on the Billboard R&B singles chart. In spite of this, company founder Berry Gordy, Jr. and many within the company believe strongly in the groups’ potential and stand by them. During the second Motortown Revue tour, Smokey Robinson and Bobby Rogers of The Miracles come up with the idea for a song, which starts as an inside joke between the two life long friends who were actually born on the exact same date (February 19, 1940), and in the same hospital in Detroit. While on tour, the pair exchange lines about picking up a girl that evolves into The Way You Do The Things You Do. While working on the song, Robinson shows what he’s come up with, positive that he has finally written the hit song that has eluded The Tempts. Before the group goes into the studio, they undergo a major and important change in their personnel. Original member Elbridge Al Bryant is fired from the group and is replaced by David Ruffin at the end of 1963. The track is recorded at Motown’s Studio A in Detroit on January 9, 1964, featuring The Funk Brothers providing the musical backing. Led by vocalist Eddie Kendricks’ sweet falsetto and anchored by The Temptations solid harmony, its release is voted for unanimously in the labels’ Quality Control meeting and is rush released. The single quickly establishes the group, and sets them on the course for the success they enjoy throughout the 60’s and beyond. The Way You Do The Things You Do peaks at #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 11, 1964 (#1 Cash Box R&B singles chart. Billboard does not publish an R&B singles chart from November 30, 1963 to January 23, 1965). The Way You Do The Things You Do becomes one the most popular and widely covered songs in the Motown catalog, with cover versions by Rita Coolidge (#20 Pop) and UB40, whose reggae cover of the song returns it to the top ten, peaking at #6 on the Hot 100 in December of 1990.
