Every now and then you cross paths with people that leave you at a loss for words. For me, one of those people is Dan Kosick. I was approached by Herman Tio, the boxing coach at my martial arts gym (shout out to Broome County Martial Arts), who asked me If I would be interested in filming a combat conditioning workout with one of his students. When he explained to me who Dan was I knew I had to meet him. To say Dan has overcome adversity is an understatement. When Dan was a t...eenager he lost his right leg to cancer. That alone would have been enough to derail most people’s lives, but he has turned an unfortunate situation into motivation to complete some truly astounding feats. He has been on the U.S. adaptive alpine ski team and competed at both the Nagano Japan and Salt Lake City Winter Games, he was the first above the knee amputee to complete 50 miles in less than 24 hours during the World’s Toughest Mudder event hosted by Merrell a company of which he is a brand ambassador for, and has recently climbed Ecuador’s second tallest mountain. These are just a few of his accomplishments, but he would be the last person to tell you about them. I’m not exaggerating either, I only know about most of that because I looked it up after we met. Dan is one of the most friendly and humble people I have ever met. He has dedicated much of his life to helping others whether it’s at his job as a middle school social worker, coaching lacrosse, being a board member of his local Make-A-Wish chapter or through his involvement with the Range Of Motion Project (ROMPglobal.org) which provides prosthetic and orthotic services for people around the world. On top of all of that Dan endures Combat Conditioning workouts with Herman. Herman is a master of his craft and coaches everyone from people who have never put on gloves, all the way up to elite level professional mixed martial arts competitors. Before I met him I didn’t realize how much of an art form American Boxing truly is. Traditionally perceived as a brutish slugfest, the fluidity in his movement and the effortless speed and precision behind his combinations prove that is far from reality. Every step and shot has a purpose well beyond simply striking your opponent and it’s just as much a game of wits as it is physicality. Not to mention it’s some of the most functional and beneficial exercise out there. All in all, this was an awesome project to be a part of and I’m honored to have been involved. Far too often I find myself making excuses, wishing things happened differently or just generally feeling sorry for myself. When I watch this video, or even think of what Dan has done with what life handed him, it inspires me to push myself through what ever is in front of me. While I often preach it, I often seem to forget that life is only what you make of it. Dan Kosick is living proof of that.

04/14/2021 Is CBD oil a magical formula that will cure all that ails you? I'm going with no, but I've heard enough anecdotal accounts from people who's opinions I trust that I'm willing to give it a go as a sleep aid. Plus my knee is starting to remind me that I'm 30 so if it helps with that, bonus points. We will see.
