As New Mexico’s Secretary of State, Soledad Chacón (D) made history by becoming the first Latina AND woman of color to hold a statewide elected executive office ... with her husband serving as her Assistant Secretary of State. Making her mark on the Hispanic community and our country as a whole, Soledad became the first female (acting) governor of a U.S. state in 1924. Ten years later she became the first Hispanic woman elected to the state legislature from her county. There would not be another for forty-one years. Her achievements set a tone for all women, and illustrate the impact a single person can have on generations of people to come. Voting isn’t a privilege; it’s a right. One that has been earned countless times over by women like Soledad Chacón. I often question to myself about the meaning of life and death, about light and darkness, Love and the history of humanity, why we are here on this planet? @armandosebastian In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, we would like to shine a bright spotlight on an inspiring Dallas-based artist from Monterrey Mexico, Armando Sebastian, who uses biographical moments to create vibrant paintings that challenge gender stereotypes and give new life to historical Mex...ican Folk-art. Sebastian’s piece titled When I Have Long Hair is a true embodiment of his nod to iconic artists depicted through the lens of his personal journey. The inspiration for the painting came from Frida Kahlo's Autorretrato con Pelo Corto (Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair), which she created after divorcing her husband who’d been having an affair. Kahlo poignantly painted herself wearing men’s clothing and included lyrics from a Mexican song that state, "I loved you because of your hair. Now that you cropped your hair, I don't love you anymore." Sebastian explained in an interview that he created his piece a portrait surrounded by phrases encouraging self-love -- in juxtaposition to Kahlo’s: "I never let my hair grow until a couple of years ago. I always had it close-cropped. I thought about doing a painting of myself where I did the opposite to Frida saying I love my long hair and now I love myself more. It's a small tribute to Frida and myself." The artist shared that it is his intention to bring awareness and sensitivity to the LGBTQIAX community by giving his art subjects undefined gender to symbolize his belief that love should be all that matters. I was embarrassed be...cause my hair had been shaved on only part of my head, the rest was falling out because of anemia, and I just felt so far from myself.
