Eric and Jill are great caretakers of this historic building in University City neighborhood. They have charisma & talent & energy galore! My first loaf out of Bien Cuit cookbook, 60 hour miche - thanks to Carolyn at Cranberry Meadow Farm for recommending this great book. The recipe instructs to wait 10 hours to cut. This will be a long 10 hours!

We had this unbelievable cold soup years ago and Portugal and I’ve been looking for a recipe for years! I found it! It’s called arjamolho and they have an excellent recipe in NYTimes on July 17. Darn good. Vegan! Addictive. It’s tomato, cucumber onions and a few other simple ingredients floating in a vinegar water broth. Sounds like gazpacho but just not. Oh my - I just realized it’s National Buttermilk Biscuit Day and I just happened to make biscuits today ! They are good. I was trying to figure out what to do with a bunch of leftover whey from Greek yogurt making. That stuff makes killer biscuits, by the whey. #biscuits #nationalbuttermilkbiscuitday

I’ve been baking all kinds of bread since I was 15 years old but just never could figure out the whole sourdough starter culture thing. The constant travel was always an issue for maintaining the starter. @joseybakerbread tutorials helped me get it. These are 50% whole wheat 50% white flour loaves and they are amazing. If you are in Philly and want some of my homemade mature starter I am delighted to share!

Just learned of Don Smetzer’s passing last week. Don was an unbelievable Chicago photographer and even greater spirit. Don did photography for the movie industry (see Don’s iconic image from Home Alone here) and so much more. In 2004 when we started Jumping Rocks, Don took me shopping for strobes and mentored me in starting our business. I was clueless and I couldn’t have done it without him and Barbara his wife. Here’s to you Don!! A life well lived!! So many will miss you.
