Notevember! Gaits again, this time walk. The walk is a gait of four evenly-spaced footfalls. The sequence is, left hind, left fore, right hind, right fore. An e...lastic walk will demonstrate overtrack, which means that the hind foot lands ahead of the hoofprint of the fore foot. To see overtrack, watch a front hoof. Leave your eye on that place as the front foot leaves, and use your peripheral vision to see where the hind hoof lands in relation to that front hoof print. A short walk has the hind hoof landing in the front hoof print. A better walk has the hind hoof landing in front of the fore hoof print. An elastic walk had the hind hoof landing two or three hoof-widths in front of the fore hoofprint. Caution is imperative with a big walk, though. That big walk can be difficult to collect without compromising the clarity of the rhythm. The walk can become lateral, meaning that the rhythm becomes one-two, three-four, or even purely lateral, when both legs on the same side move together, like a Standardbred. This can occur because a very bug walk is shortened without care, it can be inherent in the genetics of the individual, or it can be created by tension or restriction in the back. Improving the walk can include long, unrestricted walks outside, particularly on hills or slopes. Walk poles or cavaletti help clarify the activity and rhythm. Better still, buy a good walk and then be very careful to keep it pure! Don’t shorten the walk for at least several years, until the horse understands how to engage behind in trot and canter.

Due to COVID 19 we have come to the decision that the safety and well being of our members are of the utmost importance. Therefore, we have reluctantly decide...d that unfortunately we will not be hosting an end of year awards banquet for this year. We hope that everyone can understand how hard it was to make this decision, however, keeping our community and members safe is our number one factor. The presentation of awards is TBD. We hope that everyone stays safe and healthy. Please stay tuned for further information. See more
