Happy Easter? A pensive Easter Day filled with thoughts about the crucifixion of Jesus and selflessness & martyrdom in 1st-century Judea, in 2011 at my farm, a...nd still now, in our society in 2021. Pagan Rome believed in mythological deities, Gods & Goddesses like Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Cronus, Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Saturn, Serapis, Cybele, & Mithra, beliefs gathered from countries the Romans conquered. In the years between Christ’s birth and his death, the Romans established a single system of worship by merging religion and the state, thereby ushering in the dawn of Emperor-Worship. Life in the 1st-century was brutal, with corruption and violence rampant, even within religious groups. Jesus sacrificed his life to point the way to salvation for mankind; it is also theorized that the crucifixion of Jesus was moral atonement for mans’ sins which granted martyrdom to Jesus. But why did the Romans accept Christianity after the death of Jesus?? It has often been said ‘the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church’ (Tertullian[5]). The emperors claimed to be Gods. However, all the emperors subsequently died. Roman paganism was linked to conquest, violence and murder. Pagan sacrifices did not produce the result claimed for them. By comparison with paganism, Christianity welcomed and valued women, non-Romans, non-Greeks, slaves and social outcasts; Christianity was substantially more welcoming than other religions/beliefs of the time. Regretfully, I see martyrdom in natures’ food chain at my farm and incredibly frustratingly, and sadly, still in society in 2021. The tragedies at my farm and the heroes and martyrs in the recent violent news stories make me think back to the sacrifice Jesus made for our salvation and his martyrdom for us. In 2011, a client gifted me a beautiful white Rooster, which he bought at Eichner's Farm in Wexford, Pa; he named him Hercules, lol, as this little guy had to watch over, and husband my entire flock of Rhode Island Red hens. A Rooster does not sleep in the safety of the fenced-in area, or in the hen house, but rather he sleeps outside the fence, to watch all night for predators, to protect his hens. In August of 2012, I came home to a slaughter; a pack or band of coyotes had not just killed all of my hens; they had torn them to pieces. It devastated me to see that that Hercules had fought for his hens; in fact, his white feathers were mixed into the red feathers of every single dead hen. They took poor Hercules away with them; I cried for days and then I spent the money to extend my hen house, and then to encircle it with 7 foot high steel fencing that crosses over the top as well. I ordered new chicks to start my flock over. The raccoons, mink, opossums, coyotes, hawk and rodents kill my hens all year; it is a constant hunting and trapping battle. Each year, 125-150 new one day-old chicks arrive here and the cycle starts over. In the absence of a Rooster, a hen assumes the job of night Sentry by positioning herself out side of the safely fenced in the night area to warn of the flock of impending danger. Each hen or martyr, who takes on this dangerous role disappears in about a month. See Hercules’ photo here guarding his girls in 2012, and see my most recent losses, Henrietta and then Myrtle as they perched in the bushes outside the fence this winter. They martyred themselves to protect the flock. This year, I watched the news about the riot at our Capital and I joined the nation in mourning for the brave Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, and again this week as we prayed for the family of the loving and brave Capitol Police officer William Billy Evans. As I think of these martyrs, I wonder if we have made any progress since Jesus gave up his life for us in the 1st-century. I have guns to protect my chickens and ducks; I do not have, nor do I believe that any citizens need an assault rifle. Please, let’s not have more martyrs here on our soil. Our brave soldiers and officers of the law face death every day to protect us, let us do what is necessary to protect them with the appropriate gun laws; Jesus set the example, let us follow it. I offer prayers for all people at this Holy time of Easter and Passover. See more
