Hunters who haven’t purchased their 2020-21 Pennsylvania hunting or furtaker licenses, or who need to purchase a permit or privilege for a late-season hunting a...dventure should do so this week. Pennsylvania’s Automated Licensing System (PALS) will be temporarily unavailable, beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 12. The temporary shutdown is necessary to complete an upgrade to a new licensing system. While most hunters and trappers have purchased their general licenses already, many hunting seasons are underway, and some individuals might find themselves in sudden need of an archery, muzzleloader or migratory bird license, or perhaps a shooting-range permit or Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) permit. Please note during this time, hunters will not be able to report harvests online but can continue to report through the mail with the postcards included with the Hunting & Trapping Digest. Pennsylvania’s ruffed grouse and woodcock hunting seasons reopen TODAY, December 14, 2020! With ruffed grouse populations up 10% due to a mild West Nile Virus y...ear, it is a good time to go in search for the King of Thunder. Good luck, have fun and hunt safely! Pennsylvania grouse and woodcock hunters can help the Pennsylvania Game Commission manage these important game birds by becoming a Game Commission Grouse or Woodcock Cooperator and keeping a log of their daily hunting activities. Participating hunters are asked to record number of flushes and hours by county(s) hunted. Your information helps the Game Commission track the year-to-year status of these game bird populations as well as hunter success. To become a grouse or woodcock cooperator, please call the Bureau of Wildlife Management at 717-787-5529. If no one answers, leave a voicemail stating you are interested in becoming a grouse or woodcock cooperator and provide your name and address. The Pennsylvania Game Commission has three new K-9 teams training this year. K-9 Ayla (pictured below) and OSI Shawn Barron serve as the agency’s K-9 team in ...the southwest region and have had a busy and exciting fall training in the field! On the left, Ayla was working on some obedience training during the first significant snowfall in Somerset County. On the top right, Ayla located an arrow that was used to unlawfully harvest a deer from a vehicle after legal shooting hours. On the bottom right, she successfully located a used shotgun cartridge in reference to a safety zone violation.

The Game Commission mobile app is a one-stop shop that provides hunters and trappers with the information they need most. Through the app hunters can check seas...ons and bag limits, locate bear or elk check stations, find CWD head collection bins or report their deer or turkey harvest while afield. The app also provides instant access to the Hunting & Trapping Digest and the agency’s Mapping Center, which charts hunting opportunities including pheasant releases on state game lands and other hunting properties. The Game Commission mobile app is free to download on iTunes and Google Play stores.
