-: We're deep in winter, and the snow shows no sign of retreat. Bill is continuously running the snowblower, clearing snow paths to and from the greenhouse. In between snow removals, we ready the greenhouse for spring: potting seeds and bare roots, organizing wholesale contracts and pre-orders, planning, making website changes, and more. Whenever spring decides to show its face, we'll be prepared! (But really, though, we intend to be customer-ready come early... March. The exact timing, as always, depends on the weather. We'll keep you posted!) : Photos are from the February 1 snowstorm that brought us 26 inches of snow. Yesterday/today's storm brought us ~7 inches.

Did you know we run Keystone Wildflowers from our family home? It's why we operate by appointment only. Currently, our home is in the midst of a kitchen renovation, so we've had to keep a more watchful eye on our furry greenhouse assistants. They are not to be trusted alone with plants. Ask us how we know. #keystonewildflowers #nativeplants #nativeplantnursery #plantnatives

Deserts aren’t the only places on Earth with cacti. #WildflowerWednesday Opuntia humifusa, or Eastern Prickly Pear, is a sun-loving cactus native to eastern North America. This cactus thrives in full sun and sandy, dry conditions, making it ideal for the driest part of your garden. Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus produces stunning, bright yellow flowers from July to August alongside fleshy, green pads. After flowering, the pads produce bright red, edible fruits. In the winter, t...he pads dry up, appearing dead, only to be revived in spring. Be sure to handle the cactus with care, as the pads are covered in clusters of barbed bristles. However, after carefully washing in water and cutting off the bristles, the leaf pads can be cooked like string beans and eaten. Interested in this plant? We have an abundance of stock available! Are you planning a pollinator garden? Today’s aromatic, #WildflowerWednesday perennial should be at the top of your list! Pycnanthemum muticum, or Showy Mountain Mint, is a 3 foot, clump-forming perennial with white to violet blooms and silvery, blue-green leaves appearing in mid to late summer. Showy Mountain Mint prefers moist soils in part to full sun. The plants tolerate clay, heat, and drought. Showy Mountain Mint has aromatic foliage and is spread by underground rhizome...s. Pollinators flock to the blooms, as it is an excellent nectar source for native bees, butterflies, moths, and flower flies. Mountain Mint is full of pulegone, the same oily liquid used as an insect repellent. It can be rubbed on the skin to repel mosquitoes! Pycnanthemum muticum goes by many names: Showy Mountain Mint, Clustered Mountain Mint, Blunt Mountain Mint, or Short-toothed Mountain Mint. Interested in this plant? Much like other members of the Buttercup family, the flowers of today’s #WildflowerWednesday, Tall Thimbleweed, have no petals. Instead, they have colored sepals. Anemone virginiana, or Tall Thimbleweed, is a 2-4 foot perennial member of the Buttercup family. It grows in full sun to shade and in average to dry soils. Tall Thimbleweed’s leaves are strongly veined with distinct stalks. Tall Thimbleweed produces long-lasting, greenish-white flowers from June to August. The flowe...rs give way to attractive, thimble-shaped seed heads, which remain on the plants into winter. Interested in this plant? We still have stock available! Today we’re shining the #WildflowerWednesday spotlight on Purple Meadow Rue, also known as Tall Meadow Rue or Early Meadow Rue. Thalictrum dasycarpum, or Purple Meadow Rue, is a 3-5 foot, herbaceous perennial that prefers full to part sun in medium to moist soils. The native perennial produces slender, white-yellow, tassel-like blooms from sturdy, purplish stems in early to mid-summer. It is also deer tolerant. The plants are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers grow on... separate plants. Purple Meadow Rue is found in woodland borders and openings, floodplains, woodland savannas, and thickets. It also makes a unique background plant in a garden bed. Are you interested in this plant? We have stock available! Happy National Native Plant Month! (Yes, that's a thing now. No April fooling.) The unanimous Senate passage of a bipartisan resolution, crafted by U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI), officially designates April 2021 as National Native Plant Month. I am pleased with the passage of the bipartisan resolution designating April 2021 as National Native Plant Month, said Portman. From stabilizing soil and filtering air and water to providing shelter a...nd food for wildlife, native plants play an indispensable role in supporting resilient ecosystems as well as in our everyday lives. This bipartisan resolution highlights the importance of native plants and celebrates our rich ecological heritage here in Ohio and across the nation. Hawaii is home to nearly half of our country’s threatened and endangered plant species. Now that the Senate has passed this bipartisan resolution, during April we can celebrate and highlight how native plant species support ecosystems all across America, said Hirono. Want more info?
