I was pulling out of the parking lot from my daughter’s Jiu Jitsu practice. As I reversed, she said, Daddy, I want to have as many stripes as you do. I stoppe...d the car. I looked at her and I said, I will crawl back out on that mat at 80 years old before I let you pass me up. Daddy! She said, giggling. But on that day, there were arduous challenges ahead than just crawling out on a mat. My left ankle and heel pained so much, I had been walking with a limp for over a year. I had skin plaques in new and old places that were painful. I was pretty overweight and not heading in a good direction. I was sort of, well, f#$ked - and that depressed me. The weight gain started five years prior, almost concurrently with turning age 40. I was hyper-aware and did every known diet to lose weight, but the weight gain became an unstoppable train wreck. Sometimes, I flatly gave up. Because it was easier to just say, this is how it is, what you’re meant to be. The joint pains crept in a couple of years ago, particularly in my left Achilles and heel. And its evolved, grown, expanded... But on that day, in that parking lot, I felt infuriated and embarrassed. I’d given up. I went from the guy who saw neighborhood kids playing basketball and challenging them, to not being able to put pressure on my heel and limping on by. We hired a lawn service when mowing the lawn became too much. I was humiliated. Rather than sulk, I called my doctor and told him I needed blood tests. Those blood tests returned auto-immunity, which meant my joints were being attacked by my immune system. Look, you're not the type of guy who loves medications, but that may be your future and we can get you moving around better. That said, try an anti-inflammatory diet first and let’s see how these joints and your weight do. You give me a sliver of hope, and I’m in. After about a week, the pain in my heel became manageable. I grabbed an old Gi and told my wife I’m going to class. I took Lorelai and had her sit on the side of the mat and watch. I had a pretty big guy smashing me in a full mount. I poked my head out from under his chest and smiled at my daughter, she giggled a little. I needed air, I was out of shape. But breathed, I waited. I knew he’d wrap my head up. Sometimes, just wait, and it will happen. When he did it, he inadvertently locked his post hand under my head and I rolled him and escaped. Jiu Jitsu, it’s patience and leverage. It's hanging in there. This picture is me down 40 LBS. I’ll spare everyone the before pictures. I do Jiu Jitsu three times a week. I run some. I do kettlebells. I’ll mow the lawn when this snow melts. I have no idea what tomorrow, or next week, or even next year, holds for me. But I’m happy to be back and given a bit of a second chance to live a little. Lorelai is going to be better than me one day. I’m not gonna tell her that. But at the very least, it will be when she beats me and not when she passes me. And she will beat me. But now, at least she has a little bit more work to do. I'm not done yet.

I posted an article that had some mention of politics. The message I was trying to get out is that research indicates children are safe and not a driver of infection spread. The point was just to say that Dr Fauci, who is a public official said that if you look at the data the spread among children and from children is not really big at all" . I know many people don’t like Dr. Fauci. I can recognize that he’s a controversial figure. But I still think it is significant when a public official/expert makes statements like this. If some people didn’t like the tone of the article or thought it somehow promoted a Republican message, I can appreciate that also and that’s why I removed it. I don’t think politics has a place at StoutPGH.
