Scams Are not Just for the Elderly My son, buying his first home last week, received an email from his real estate agent telling him to go ahead and wire his do...wn payment and purchase money to an account at Wells Fargo Bank the day before the closing. He thought this was unusual and checked with his lawyer and his real estate agent who said they did not request a wire transfer or a payment. Turns out the Wells Fargo account opened 3 days before was owned by a foreign company that had newly incorporated in the US within the last month. Fortunately he did not send them anything as it was a fraud. I discussed this with a prosecutor friend and she told me this is more common than you would think. Hackers access the real estate agent's email, find out when closings are set and then using the address of the Agent contact the buyer using the "spoofed" email address and instruct them to send their down payment to a bank account that looks legit. Once they send it the money is immediately wired to a bank outside the US and is gone. Excellent documentary coming out about the home care crisis and how it is going to get worse!
