Zookeeper Diaries: All of the giraffes, goats, sheep, ponies, donkeys and alpacas got their vaccines today for rabies and CDT (clostridium and tetanus). This video is of Tucker getting his practice shots from zookeeper Kelsey followed by his actual vaccine shot from the vet. The practice shot (simply touching the skin with something like an empty syringe) and the audible "poke" is a desensitizing technique that aids Tucker in receiving his shot.

Zookeeper Diaries: Today zookeepers collected an ostrich egg that was laid last night. Since our ostriches do not sit on their eggs as they would in the wild, it will be placed in the incubator for 39 days. An automatic turner will rotate the eggs every hour. Then, for three days they, will be placed in the hatcher which is similar to the incubator except that the eggs will no longer rotate and will have more room to hatch on the 42nd day.

It's Twins! The marmosets in our Reptiles & Exotics facility became the parents of two new little ones on January 1. Watch our momma marmoset pick up one of her babies from the dad. Both marmosets help carry the babies, but mom will come pick them up when it’s time to feed. Marmosets usually have 1 - 3 babies at a time, but three can be difficult to feed. (The mother may not produce enough milk to feed three.) The gender of the newborns is unknown and will be for several months to a year until an external difference is visible.

Zookeeper Diaries: Check it Out! After seven years in our reptile facility, our pancake tortoises, Buttersworth and Jemima, recently surprised us with an egg in their habitat! With a closer look, we believe the egg-layer is Jemima (left). Way to go girl! Since both are female, the egg is not fertile. So, a male pancake tortoise on loan from another zoo will soon be "moving in".
MiIitary Macaw "Buzz" is really working his beak on one of the new toys. Thanks to all who contributed to our Wish List of enrichment toys!
Spike and Bakari are really enjoying the new enrichment toys hung by the giraffe crew. Their long tonges are getting a good work-out!
New Toys! Dani, one of our miniature horses, takes first swing at the new Blueberry scented ball purchased from our recent enrichment toys Wish List by one of our gracious Facebook followers. Fellow miniature horse, Raine, takes a try at it too while Tiny Tim, our dwarf pony, acts the true gentleman and waits his turn after the girls. Thanks to all who contributed from our Wish List!
Zookeeper Diaries: The Reptiles & Exotics Crew would like to give a Big SHOUT OUT to Hailey! Earlier this fall, Hailey received her Girl Scout Bronze Award (the highest honor you can achieve as a Junior) by making animal enrichment toys for the birds inhabiting our facility. This park season, you will notice her handiwork (and that of fellow Girl Scout - Emily) hanging in our aviary. Hailey also created an information hand-out sheet on the plight of the Macaws in the wild and tips on how you can create enrichment toys for your pet birds at home. Congratulations Hailey! and THANK YOU both for the enrichment toys!
