Every year, a group of Ds moms from around the country get together. We normally have about 25 moms, but with Covid, it was a small year. This year was Nashville and we were able to get tickets to Rory Feek’s show and then meet him and his daughters (Indy has Down syndrome). It was an amazing experience.

We received this email for a study. We do not endorse or benefit directly from the study in any way. Your participation is completely your decision and we suggest learning more about the purpose and use of the study before committing to participate. My name is Amalia Hubal. I’m currently a third-year doctoral student at La Salle University, studying for my Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology. I’m currently in the planning stages of my dissertation, under the guidance of Dr. Patri...cia Wilson, as part of my requirements for my doctoral degree. This study is going to look at siblings and seeing the impact this sibship has on their feelings of loneliness, social support, and emotional and behavioral adjustment. For this study, I’m planning on looking at 3 groups of siblings: individuals with a sibling diagnosed with autism, individuals with a sibling diagnosed with Down Syndrome, and individuals with a sibling with no known diagnosis. Siblings between the ages of 8-18 who live in the same household as their brother or sister are eligible to be included in the study. I feel that siblings are often overlooked both in research and in practice, and the research that has been done has been very conflicting. I’m hoping this study will help in providing some clarity to the field. I’m reaching out to see if you would be amenable to me reaching out to individuals from your group Lancaster Down Syndrome Advocates to participate in my study. I’m seeking individuals in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area that may have families fitting this criteria. It would be an online survey sent to them via email, and would involve one sibling and one parent to respond to the survey. The sibling would be asked about their social support resources and feelings of loneliness, and parents would be asked about their family demographics, behaviors of the sibling, and severity of their child’s autism or Down Syndrome (if applicable). This study is extremely important to me for many reasons. I’m personally a sibling of an individual with autism, and have spent my life working and volunteering with individuals diagnosed with autism, Down Syndrome, and other developmental disorders. I’ve worked with Special Olympics New Jersey since 2003, and my career goal is to work with individuals with autism and their families. Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you’d like to reach out for any further questions, you can reach me at my email, [email protected], or via phone, 609-227-8315. I look forward to hearing from you, and appreciate your time. Best, Amalia Hubal, M.A. La Salle University | 2023 Doctoral Student, Clinical Psychology [email protected] 609-227-8315
