In February, we celebrate Black History Month in the United States. This is our opportunity to recognize the contributions made by Black Americans who have helped shape our country’s history, growth and culture. Black history is American history. Black history is rich with examples of overcoming obstacles and breaking barriers. It’s a history of countless unique achievements that have made an indelible impression on our country. And it’s a history that amplifies the many stor...ies of perseverance and bravery that make America the glorious melting pot it continues to be. Black History Month is rightfully a source of pride for many and offers an opportunity for enlightenment for others. But, we would all be well-served to view it through the lens of our Core Values, especially Respect Individuality to Create the Team and Do the Right Thing Always. As we have seen firsthand over the last several months when our nation has wrestled with the pain of inequity and racial injustice, aspiring to uphold those values and doing the hard work required to address disparities that still exist today helps ensure that our future will be better than our past. After experiencing functional decline due to Multiple Sclerosis, Gerald was admitted to Lancaster Rehab Hospital in early January. His Neurologist reached out to LRH to help Gerald with his strength and train him to use new equipment in his home. Our therapists provided him with multiple exercises that would allow him to progress from the comfort of his home. Gerald was pleased with his stay at LRH and stated his stay couldn’t have been better. Everyone was so nice, from the nurses to the housekeeping staff. After 10 days at LRH, we are happy that he is returning home feeling stronger and more confident. Way to go Gerald! Thank you for allowing LRH to be part of your successful recovery.

It’s expected that at least 20% of patients recovering from COVID-19 will require facility-based rehabilitation, according to a recent medical study. The statistic holds true as we continue to highlight many of our patients who have successfully received treatment and recovered following a COVID-19 diagnosis. Mr. Gilbert was admitted to Lancaster General Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 in January. William was an avid golfer and completely independent prior to co...ming to LGH. After 52 days in the hospital, Mr. Gilbert was transferred to Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital to start his rehabilitation journey. Initially, William required two skilled therapists in order to complete standing functions and was only able to ambulate short distances. Mr. Gilbert made leaps and bounds during his rehabilitation journey was able to return home from LRH in just 19 days. Following his treatment within our care, William was able to ambulate 200 feet with walker at an independent level and was able to complete a full flight of elevations, a sometimes trying task for individuals with respiratory complications. Thank you William for allowing LRH to assist you with your therapy needs!

Following a recent open heart surgery, Mr. Lemons suffered from a very complicated hospital stay, where he required intubation that resulted in him needing a tracheostomy. Mr. Lemons was then bed ridden for a duration of his one month hospital stay, which made him very weak. Mr. Lemons was then transferred to Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital, where he underwent intensive therapy while being medically monitored by our LRH physicians. Mr. Lemons was with us for 27 days before he was able to return home with his family with the use of a walker. What a great start to the 2021 New Year! Good luck Mr. Lemons and thank you for allowing LRH to be a part of your care.

Traumatic Brain Injury the invisible injury. Traumatic brain injuries are often referred to as invisible injuries because they cannot be seen like a broken arm or bruise. The CrashCourse Brain Fly-Through conceptualizes an otherwise invisible injury. It uses state-of-the-art technology from Stanford University’s Neurosurgical Simulation and Virtual Reality Center. World mountain biking champion Kate Courtney takes the viewer on a journey through the human brain, using dra...matic race footage coupled with her own personal concussion experience. This fly-through showcases the brain’s blood vessels, nervous system and cerebrospinal fluid cavities, while emphasizing the complexity and fragility of the brain as well as the importance of caring for it. In early October, Samuel was admitted to an acute hospital where he underwent a major cardiac surgery. His hospital stay took a turn for the worse and he required intubation, a tracheostomy and was hospitalized for nearly 2 months prior to starting his rehab stay at Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital. Samuel came to us requiring assistance of two people to stand and was only able to ambulate a few steps before needing to sit and take a break. After 11 days under our care, Samuel was able to progress to a level where he could return home to his family while only requiring the use of a rolling walker and intermittent assistance from his family. Samuel has come such a long way and we would like to congratulate him on all of the successes he has made with the LRH team! Great job, Samuel!

In early November, Mike was on a motorcycle ride when he suddenly lost control of his bike and sustained multiple injuries, including a below-the-knee amputation. He spent 18 days in the hospital and endured multiple setbacks before he was transferred to LRH for rehabilitation. Mike says his healing did not begin until he arrived at LRH. Throughout his stay at both the hospital and in rehabilitation, many staff members made remarks about his positive attitude and determinatio...n. He put in the hard work with physical and occupational therapy, which led him to improving his balance significantly and transitioning from ambulating with a walker to using crutches - which is no easy feat! It was difficult for Mike not seeing his wife and kids while in rehabilitation. However, he was able to Facetime with his family often. His 5-year-old twins see their dad as a superhero and, even want to take his prosthetic leg for show and tell at school! Mike is extremely grateful to his wife and motorcycle club family for supporting him throughout this journey. This accident has not slowed him down and he is appreciative of all the healthcare workers who have encouraged him along the way. After 10 days at LRH, he is excited that he can go home to his family. Mike is looking forward to receiving a prosthetic leg after his wounds have healed and is hopeful to return to LRH for gait training. Thank you Mike for being such an inspiration to everyone around you.
