Laurel Highlands Snowmobile Club 04.05.2021

Hello Everyone, Hope you are all doing well, we will be having our monthly meeting for the general membership this week at the club house at 8pm. This Saturday April 10th at 9 am we will be meeting at the clubhouse for our annual Adopt A Highway cleanup day. We will be cleaning up our section of Route 31 as well as clean up along Tunnel Road to help Jefferson Township. If you would like to help us out, we would be happy to have you. We are also planning on having 2 races ...this year at our track. The dates are September 26th and October 10th. Hopefully, you can help if you have some free time. The races are a big event at our club, and it takes a bunch of volunteers to pull them off. So, keep those dates in mind. That is about all I have for updates right now. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks, Sheila Knupp

These pictures were taken Tuesday night. Thank you to those who made reports and those who moved things to the side of the trail. Stay safe and happy riding.

DCNR has sent a message to Sheila. They are finding a variety of hazards on the mountain. They mentioned stuck vehicles, downed wires, and downed trees. Their priority is to open up Laurel Summit Road so that emergency vehicles can get through to anyone with possible needs that live in the village. Beyond that they are working to remove the trees and debris from the trails.

We are hearing reports from all over the trail system that there are many branches and trees down due to the amount of ice that we had received this week. DCNR is out working on clearing what they can. Please use caution while trying to ride. It sounds like many of the trails are impassable at the moment.

Hello, We held our board meeting last night and have decided with the covid issues we are going to cancel our winter events for this year. It is just not worth taking the risk on getting anyone sick. We are hoping for a good winter next year. I will continue to keep everyone updated as to what is going on at the clubhouse via emails as we move on, also keep an eye on our website. Enjoy the riding that we have around our area and stay safe. Thanks, Sheila Knupp

Hello Everyone, Hope you are all out and enjoying the wonderful weather we have been receiving. This is one of the best years we had in a while. We are going to conduct the board meeting via zoom again this month and will NOT have the general membership meeting. We are hoping to be back to in person meetings next month. We have been in contact with the DCNR. They do have groomers in our area, was a misprint. They will be out but please be patient, when they groom it will compact the snow and riding may or may not be good due to lack of snow.. They are doing their best with the snow that we have. Thanks everyone and pray for snow, lots of it!

Hello Everyone, We will NOT be having the general membership monthly meeting again this month. The board will meet via zoom to discuss the club activities. I will send out emails as we decide on winter activities at the club. We don't have much snow up there now, let's hope that changes very soon! Thanks, Sheila Knupp

Hello everyone. We have decided to cancel the annual December, DCNR update meeting. With the current number of cases in the area, we felt the risks were too great. We have been given written updates from both Forestry and Laurel Hill State Park. This is their reports: From Forestry: First and foremost, we want to Thank You for your support and help throughout the last year!... As we all know, it’s been a very difficult year for everyone! Ed Callahan and I sat down (six feet apart, etc. etc.) and drafted these notes for your meeting. Regarding: Budget Received money to reimburse Maple Summit and Rolling Ridge for gas/oil for grooming Received very little money for upkeep of equipment Received money for OT for grooming Received money for fuel for grooming In general the state is down much in revenue, and so far operating budgets have only been for critical purchases Most of the money for the snowmobile program this year came in the form of a grant, not from the Snowmobile/ATV fund. Staff New Ranger Josh McVay. Josh came to us from Laurel Hill State Park, so he knows the area and what we’re about. Decent staffing at Laurel Mtn for grooming (down only one position). Only 1 employee on at Mt Davis right now. The other due to come back after Christmas. Doesn’t affect snowmobiling, but we’re down another Maintenance Supervisor (this makes TWO), due to retirement. Projects Biggest project on Joint Use Roads was a Liquid Fuels project at Mt. Davis: approx. 1.5 miles of South Wolf Rock and Christner Roads were improved with 1442 tons of stone ($20, 000). Received grant money and fixed up trail section between Camp Run and Auckerman Roads Completed new Office Building for the Mt. Davis crew and the Ranger stationed there. This is a MAJOR upgrade to our facilities! General Trail Maintenance at Laurel Mountain: some Tiger Mowing of sections of trails, minor drainage work, clearing of trees/brush. On the Horizon Plans are being made to replace several culverts on Beam Road Contract has been issued to replace three culverts on Glade Road. Construction to be done next Spring/Summer. Misc Warming Hut is open unless we receive direction to close it Latrines are being kept clean District Office is still closed to the public entering the building, but Walk Up window service is available for maps, camping permits, etc. New/Updated Snowmobile Map should be in soon. We’ll drop off a bundle when they’re in. Again, we Thank You for your support. Here’s hoping that You and Yours will be healthy in 2021 and beyond. Best Wishes, Don Stiffler From Laurel Hill: All is well. Thanks for asking. Hope you guys are doing well, also. We do not have much to report on our end. No changes or updates I can think of. If there are any specific questions related to State Park operations I would be happy to answer them. We will plan to groom when conditions are present and staff is available. Take care and let me know. Mike Mumau
