Yesterday was a busy day with wind-related emergencies throughout the area. One call in particular demonstrates the importance of readiness. While standing by at an otherwise routine "tree in wires", the engine crew noted the possibility of smoldering branches falling into dry pine needles below. As what we thought to be only a precaution, we positioned the engine 2 pole lengths away and pulled a booster line in the event of a ground cover fire. About 20 minutes into moni...toring the situation and waiting for ppl, the ground suddenly did catch fire. In the 30 seconds it took to charge and position the booster line the fire spread quickly. This happened again 10 minutes later. Had these precautions not been in place with a readiness mentality, the fire could have quickly exceeded our ability to stop it with high winds and dry ground cover. Good work to all of the volunteers as always. See more
Tree on wires, Germanville Road. PPL is aware. Avoid the area.
Tonight's training focused on applications with our extended 350' 2.5 line including nozzle and "courtyard" breakdowns with a gated wye, as well as pump operation review. Next evolution involved basic rope and knots review.
Engine 4-12 responded to a tree down on High Road. Units cleared the tree with power tools and returned. Asst 4-2 (Stehr) with command. 5 personnel responded on the daytime call.
