DRAMATIC DECLINE IN DEMENTIA SEEN AMONG OLDER ADULTS IN THE US There has been a significant decline in older U.S. adults with dementia, including alzheimer's from 2000 to 2012. The percent of seniors with dementia fell to 8.8% in 2012. Focusing on the greater proportion of those who are 85 years or old, the decline increased to 8.6%. It is believed that the decline in dementia is accounted for by factors such as education and cardiovascular health, which reduces one's chances of developing alzheimers.

CAREGIVING IS FORCING WOMEN 50+ TO LEAVE THE WORKFORCE Forbes October 10, 2016 Women are less likely to be in the workforce if they are providing personal care for their parents. Among men, caregiving has no relationship to employment status. Women often bear the burden of unpaid elder care and as such are forced to make a choice between their jobs and caretaking. The federal Family and Medical Leave Act allows up to 12 weeks of UNPAID leave. The firm of Deloitte offers up to 16 weeks of PAID leave, but this is unusual. The problem is that women have higher poverty rates than men. If they exit the workforce, they don't have the opportunity to contribute to their pension or save money for the future.

This past Sunday's New York Times displayed an article on Alzheimers examining the disease. Linked to it was an earlier outstanding piece, "Fraying at the Edges: Her Fight to Live With Alzheimers" tracing a dynamic New York woman from early diagnosis, through videos, looking at herself in the mirror and her thought process as she waited for the memory loss, etc. to progress.
