Words of wisdom from Taxgirl...

For my clients and friends who take care of an elderly person with dementia: you almost always will connect with them via music! Sometimes when nothing seems to work, music will work. And it can be as simple as taking your smartphone along when you visit and playing music from your collection. Some days, just getting a toe tapping is a victory. Here is a good article I came across. Hang in there, family caregivers!

I found it shocking that Prince had no will or trust when he died, and now it seems Aretha Franklin had no estate plan either! She died intestate. Sometimes intestacy is resolved without difficulty; more often than not, this situation can be a big problem. Everyone, if you are in your mid-twenties or older, at least get your will done (each person needs his or her own will, even if you are part of a couple). And relying on an online service for will or trust advice is being penny-wise and pound-foolish. Don’t do it. I encourage everyone who reads this to resolve to get your will or trust done this year!

Dear friends, clients, future friends and future clients: I’ve been thinking of doing a seminar with snacks or lunch for the registered attendees sometime in the future. If the topic were something like: Really bad ideas for avoiding probate and how not to make these mistakes, would anyone find that interesting? Or perhaps Things to think about regarding your documents, or, why your 40-year-old Will is probably no good anymore. Or perhaps When is a Power of Attorney good for your family member, or must it be a guardianship? Let me know if you think subjects like these would be interesting to people. Have a great weekend, everybody!
