We remember. . . . On December 7, 1941 aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Almost 2,500 military personnel were killed and more than 1,100 others were injured. Two U. S. Navy battleships were sunk. Five battleships, three destroyers, three cruisers, and one minelayer were destroyed. We honor those who gave their all so that we may remain free.

Today, October 28 is National Internal Medicine Day! Probably one of the most famous IM Doctors is Jonas Salk! Dr. Jonas Salk (1914-1995) is renowned for having developed the first safe and effective polio vaccine in the 1950s. He never patented the vaccine or earned any money from his discovery, preferring it be distributed as widely as possible. In 1960, Dr. Salk founded the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego. #NationalInternalMedicineDay #IMProud @ACPinternists

DON'T FORGET--Wear a mask! Wearing a mask can help protect you, not just those around you, from coronavirus transmission, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in new guidance Tuesday. The statement was an update to previous guidance suggesting the main benefit of mask wearing was to help prevent infected people from spreading the virus to others. Cloth masks act as "source control" to block virus particles exhaled by the wearer and provide "filtration for personal protection" by blocking incoming infectious droplets from others! Mask wearing is for you---and me!

SCA is not a heart attack. A heart attack is caused by impeded blood flow through the heart. SCA is caused by a structural or electrical problem, often from an undetected heart condition, and in other instances, from an infection or a severe blow to the chest. In 95% of cases, the SCA victim is lost. To survive SCA, the victim must receive life-saving defibrillation from an automated external defibrillator (AED) within the first four to six minutes.

We are thinking about our eyes. Careless accidents can happen when we are not regularly assessing our surroundings. Our homes are full of everyday objects that can cause eye injury: kitchen knives, scissors, letter openers, pencils, rubber bands, and champagne corks. There are countless ways to permanently damage our eyes if we do not store sharp objects correctly or if we use them irresponsibly. Pleae be careful! Your vision is irreplaceable, so treat it with care.

Today is World Sight Day to bring attention to blindness and vision impairment. Eye injuries can be prevented by wearing protective eyewear and taking some simple precautions. Goggles or safety glasses should be worn while doing yard work, using power tools and playing sports. The most effective eyewear should be snug with a wrap-style frame to keep airborne particles from getting behind the lenses.
