Tips for Understanding and Preventing Wandering Many people with Alzheimer's disease wander away from their home or caregiver. Alzheimer's disease can erase a person's memory of past surroundings and make their new environment seem threatening. As a result, people with Alzheimer's sometimes wander away from their homes or care centers and are found - frightened and disoriented - far from where they started, long after they disappeared. The causes of wandering can be... simple or be related to many factors, such as: Too much stimulation, such as multiple conversations in the background or even the noise of pots and pans in the kitchen Medication side effects Memory loss and disorientation Attempts to express emotions, such as fear, isolation, loneliness or loss Curiosity Restlessness or boredom. (Read more: http://tinyurl.com/zpvzm23 ) As a caregiver, you need to know https://www.nia.nih.gov//hom/home-safety-behavior-behavior and prevent the person from becoming lost. This will help keep the person safe and give you greater peace of mind. Try to follow these tips before the person with AD wanders: Make sure the person carries some kind of ID or wears a medical bracelet. If the person gets lost, an ID will let others know about his or her illness. It also shows where the person lives. Consider enrolling the person in the MedicAlert + Alzheimer's Association Safe Return Program (see http://www.alz.org/ or call 1-888-572-8566 to find the program in your area). This service is not affiliated with the National Institute on Aging. There may be a charge for this service. Let neighbors and the local police know that the person with AD tends to wander. Keep a recent photograph or video recording of the person to help police if the person becomes lost. Keep doors locked. Consider a keyed deadbolt, or add another lock placed up high or down low on the door. If the person can open a lock, you may need to get a new latch or lock. Install an "announcing system" that chimes when the door opens. http://1m.ag/zpueb

Changes Associated with Aging in a Healthy Brain vs. a Brain with Dementia In the past several decades, scientists have learned much about what happens in the brain when people have a neurodegenerative disease such as Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease or other dementias. Their findings also have revealed much about what happens during healthy aging. Researchers are investigating a number of changes related to healthy aging in hopes of learning more about this p...rocess so they can fill gaps in our knowledge about the early stages of AD. As a person gets older, changes occur in all parts of the body, including the brain: Certain parts of the brain shrink, especially the prefrontal cortex (an area at the front of the frontal lobe) and the hippocampus. Both areas are important to learning, memory, planning, and other complex mental activities. Changes in neurons and neurotransmitters affect communication between neurons. In certain brain regions, communication between neurons can be reduced because white matter (myelin-covered axons) is degraded or lost. Changes in the brain's blood vessels occur. Blood flow can be reduced because arteries narrow and less growth of new capillaries occurs. In some people, structures called plaques and tangles develop outside of and inside neurons, respectively, although in much smaller amounts than in AD (see "https://www.nia.nih.gov//part-2-what-happens-/hallmarks-ad" for more information on plaques and tangles). Damage by https://www.nia.nih.gov//alzheimers-disease-unra/glossary increases (free radicals are a kind of molecule that reacts easily with other molecules; see "https://www.nia.nih.gov//part-3-ad-rese/looking-causes-ad" for more on these molecules). Inflammation increases (inflammation is the complex process that occurs when the body responds to an injury, disease, or abnormal situation). These changes vary greatly from the effects aging has on mental function in healthy older people. Some people may notice a modest decline in their ability to learn new things and retrieve information, such as remembering names. They may perform worse on complex tasks of attention, learning, and memory than would a younger person. However, if given enough time to perform the task, the scores of healthy people in their 70s and 80s are often similar to those of young adults. In fact, as they age, adults often improve in other cognitive areas, such as vocabulary and other forms of verbal knowledge.
