In our latest "At Home" video, National Park Service Ranger David Powers talks about the history of the Liberty Bell during the British Occupation of Philadelph...ia. As part of the British's divide and conquer strategy, General William Howe hoped to capture either on of America's icons, either General George Washington, or the Continental Congress. In anticipation of the British advance into Philadelphia, many items that would be useful in supplying the British Army had been collected and hidden, or removed from the City. This included lienens and other precious metals. The Liberty Bell, though not the icon it is today, was removed and hidden in the Zion's "Liberty Bell" UCC Church basement in Allentown, PA. What do you think it would be like living in Philadelphia at that time? History can be many things. It can be uplifting. It can be hurtful. It can give joy. It can recall sorrow. It can offer hope. One thing history should never be, no matter whether it brings smiles or sadnessis forgotten. Through remembering, our history calls us to be better than we were, and through that call, we find ways of growing into a better world. It is our responsibility always to remember the past. Acts of heroism, both every day and in a time of great need, are... born out of choice. Choices only exist in a place of liberty and freedom. The people of history, who acted for the benefit of all, valued citizenship and patriotism. In their acts, the people of history risked their citizenship and lives, so others may have a sense of belonging to a nation committed to providing the delicate balance of liberty and security to all within its borders.

July 4th 2020 Bell Ringing at Liberty Bell Museum--Allentown, PA

Liberty Bell Museum of Allentown 22.09.2020

The Liberty Bell stands as a symbol to end oppression, specifically the oppression of black slavery. It was the symbol adopted by the abolitionist movement in the 19th century, and it truly lived up to its inscription, "Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to ALL the inhabitants thereof," and Zion's Church in Allentown is the place the bell was saved from the British Army during the Revolutionary War. Join us on our livestream at 1:50PM this afternoon, Saturday July 4th ...2020. Our Liberty Bell replica will join with bells across the country in ringing 13 times one for each of the 13 colonies that came together to sign the Declaration of Independence. Join us as we celebrate the liberty the bell proclaims, our nation which ensures that liberty to be a reality, and all the good things America has accomplished since July 4th 1776. May God Bless America, and all the people it safeguards, regardless of race, color, or creed.

"Hey, hey, it's hump day." Here's a song I was commissioned to write for Allentown's Zion's Church's 250th anniversary, home to the Liberty Bell during the Revo...lution. The Ballad of the Jubilee Bell. I was proud to play it in that sanctuary in 2012. Several members came up afterwards with tears in their eyes. See more
