Throwback Thursday: This picture, circa 1979, shows the rear of a HEVICOTE plant. For approximately a 25 year span HEVICOTE was applied in the northwest portion of our 35 acre facility in Bucks County, PA. HEVICOTE is a concrete coating that is applied to the exterior of steel pipe. The application method is impingement. Depending on the design density of the concrete, various aggregates are metered and mixed into a pug mill in a relatively dry mix (approx.. 5% water) a...nd is propelled (referred to as the throwing unit) onto the exterior of a rotating pipe in parallel with chicken wire mesh for steel reinforcement. There are several design reasons for concrete coating being applied to the exterior of pipe. Two of the more common reasons; are to provide mechanical protection for the underlying anti-corrosion coating and to provide negative buoyancy weight coating for installation in water such as offshore, river crossings and swampy terrain. Around 2001 when the equipment was dismantled, this method of concrete application was discontinued in Morrisville. Throwback Thursday: This picture, circa 1970, shows gondola type rail cars being loaded with bundles of 2 coated pipe. Note the two individuals inside the rail car that are guiding the bundle placement. In the gas industry, advancements in technology, have replaced steel with plastic pipe as the material of choice in most applications. However, there are still some design requirements where coated steel pipe is used. It is easy to forget the need for coating smaller diameter pipe. Liberty Coating has applied coatings from 84 inch diameter down to as small as 1/2 inch in diameter. A majority of our recent work is on 30 inch steel and 48 inch ductile iron pipe.
