One of our apartment guests last week created this fantastic cairn on the beach! It’s about 4 feet high. Our home is in the background.

Life and death on the beach: On the life side, apparently the last killdeer egg hatched and baby was escorted away with its sibling. When I went to look this morning, there was nothing left of the egg or baby, but parents were still on patrol. So that's a happy note. Such amazing grace! On the darker side: We had an arborist come yesterday to evaluate a large, oldish sugar maple tree (70+ years) growing on the bluff almost at the beach level. The tree started to leaf out ...this spring, but then stopped and leaves have mostly withered and gone brown. Arborist says not much hope for recovery and said probably time to bring it down. It feels kinda like taking a member of the family off life support. It has given so many people over the years good shade and beauty. There's another old sugar maple 25 yards away, close to the beach, that is doing very well. Trying to decide whether to pull the plug and bring on the chainsaws - or try a last ditch treatment. Our killdeer nest on the beach is progressing. Two eggs hatched but the babies were escorted to the brush before we saw them. Today we discovered a young one that had just emerged from shell. It was very still for a period of hours, but its now in a different position and looks much more healthy. Hope to see the last baby appear tomorrow!

We have killdeer eggs on the beach again this year. Birds on the nest much of the time. Awaiting further developments!
