Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer did not originate from the song Johnny Marks made famous in 1949. In the year 1939, Robert May created Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as an assignment for the department store Montgomery Ward. Rudolph was created as a way to save money on some of their annual Christmas promotions. The store had been purchasing coloring books for Christmas every year to give away to their customers. In order to save money, the store decided to design their own. As a child, Robert May was picked on and bullied, so he chose to create Rudolph based on his own childhood memories. I remember growing up in the 1970’s with my Grandma telling me stories of when she was a little girl, her family used to hang candles from their trees, so the tree would be lit up for Christmas. They would always have to keep water near the tree and could never be left unattended. Not only were these a huge fire hazard in the homes, but they could only be used inside. As the yards would remain in the dark. Imagine today, having to rely on candle power for Christmas trees.
