Now that this end of Pennsylvania is starting to open up a little with the yellow phase - now is not the time to relax our social distancing measures. The second wave of infection is often worse than the first and can be caused by ignoring measures that got you to the end of the first wave. To show what I mean, of the sixteen people buried in the Linesville Cemetery due to the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1919, only TWO of the deaths happened in the first wave: Eliza Frost Gl...ancy, aged 75 years James Howard Penfield - aged 8 months and 13 days The other FOURTEEN deaths occurred in the second wave of the pandemic: Helen M. Batchelor - aged 1 year, 11 months and 7 days Richard Lee Davis - aged 2 years Herman Walker Graff - aged 32 years Burton Paul Housel - aged 2 months and 26 days Sarah Jane Ferber McKinnon - aged 64 years Benjamin Franklin Oates - aged 78 years Ethel L. Hayden Patterson - aged 25 years William C. Penfield - aged 55 years Lois Livingston Sheakley - aged 24 years Carolyn M. Good Splitstone - aged 35 years Isaac Stratton - aged 66 years William H. Templeton - aged 52 years Ralph Warren - aged 30 years Mabelle Blair West - aged 27 years We have had several deaths during this current situation - but not a single burial here due to this pandemic, yet. Although we have tons of space and could always use the income - let's not add a single burial to this cemetery due to COVID-19. Staff safe!

Please be careful if driving in the cemetery - we had the blacktop roadway between section TUV and Z (the section directly across from Homestead Avenue) wash out over the weekend due to the rains. We have someone checking on drainage issues and repairs in the next few days, and it will probably take awhile after that for repairs - so please use caution in the meantime. Some of the areas washed away are quite deep (my cast boot shows some areas are about 6+ inches deep).

If you or your children get antsy from being stuck inside...consider going to any local cemetery and wander the rows for a little schooling and educational activities. All cemeteries are open and, as long as you don’t go in groups, there is no one there who can get sick, or make you sick. Cemeteries are full of: Art - styles of carving, statues, images on stones... Geology -different types of stones made out of rock, concrete, granite, marble, zinc (white bronze), wood and other types of metal History - as you walk through the rows, find a person or two that interest you and go home and see what you can find out about the person - you do not need Ancestry for this as there are several free on-line sites such as familysearch.org Math - find a couple of stones and calculate how old the person was when they died (subtraction) - take a whole row or two and calculate the average age at death Nature studies - come see the wide variety of animals that also love to visit cemeteries - birds, rabbits, squirrels, deer, etc. Check out the different bushes, trees and other vegetation. If in the Linesville Cemetery...see if you can find the Linesville Arborvitae that was so named because it was first found in our cemetery. Photography skills -take photos of stones during different times of the day to see how the sun, or lack thereof, can make the stone more legible or illegible. Try for some artistic-style photos Physical eduction - a great place to walk and get some exercise. Just remember that the ground is almost always uneven, with dips and rises. Sociology - can you try and figure out who might have been more prosperous, or not as prosperous based on their stone? Do you see a lot of people who may have died in the same year? Try and figure out what was going on in the area at the time - smallpox, tuberculosis, war, famine, malaria, Spanish flu, etc. Do a project, or take a photo that you are proud of, share it with us on our Facebook page and we’ll post it to our website

*Updated - with further research, we have two more people added to the list, making total 16 so far. With all the talk lately about the pandemic - I thought I would give you a list of the 14 Linesville Cemetery residents that perished during the Spanish Flu pandemic (1918-1919) of pneumonia/influenza. There were MANY more in this area that died during that time, but these are the ones that are buried in this cemetery, along with their ages.... Gone . . . but not forgotten: Helen M. Batchelor - aged 1 year, 11 months, 7 days Richard Lee Davis - aged 2 years Eliza Frost Glancy - aged 75 years Herman Walker Graff - aged 32 years Burton Paul Housel - aged 2 months and 26 days Sarah Jane Ferber McKinnon - aged 64 years Benjamin Franklin Oates - aged 78 years Ethel L. Hayden Patterson - aged 25 years James Howard Penfield - aged 8 months and 13 days William C. Penfield - aged 55 years Lois Livingston Sheakley - aged 24 years (added) Carolyn M. Good Splitstone - aged 35 years Isaac Stratton - aged 66 years William H. Templeton - aged 52 years Ralph Warren - aged 30 years Mabelle Blair West - aged 27 years (added)
