At least 3 eagles, some geese, and several dozen common mergansers on Holman Lake on this chilly and slightly snowy day.
A concerned visitor brought it to our attention that someone had placed rice piles along the Fisherman's Trail, likely as an attempt to feed or lure in birds or other wildlife. There also may be foods placed on other trails. If you see any of this, please notify park staff by calling the office at 717-567-9255. We are asking visitors to please not feed wildlife without consent. While it is legal to feed birds in your backyard (appropriate feeds), it is not legal to feed any o...ther wildlife, including in our public parks. While rice is not necessarily deadly as commonly believed, rice, along with white bread, is commonly fed to wildlife by folks who think they are helping animals in the winter. These foods may be fine for us but provide little nutrition for wildlife when they need it most, leading to nutritional deficiencies such as "angel wing" in waterfowl. If you would like to help out wildlife in the park, email the park staff at [email protected] to see how you can help. We have had bird seed donated to us for our feeding stations and would love to set up more. We can also build and install wildlife boxes to help shelter animals in the winter. If you'd like to volunteer, reach out and let us know! Also - please pick up your masks and other trash. Leave only footprints and take only pictures! For more information about feeding birds in winter (in your own backyard) check out this link by Cornell University -->https://www.allaboutbirds.org/n/browse/topic/feeding-birds/ For more information about Angel Wing and how unhealthy foods impact birds, check out this link from National Geographic --> https://blog.education.nationalgeographic.org//stop-feedi/
Find yourself a dark sky! The event will be best witnessed just after sunset.
What's that red berry? At first glance it may appear that there isn't much color in the forest right now. But a closer look will reveal a variety of brightly colored berries that are providing food for wildlife right now. Some of these are native, and sadly many of them are invasive. How many can you correctly identify? Answers are posted under the caption of each photo. How did you do?
I am sure some of you noticed that the restroom building along Fisherman's Trail is gone. Now is your chance to contribute to the area. As you walk around other areas of the park, pick up a handful of acorns. When you walk by the old bathroom site, throw your acorns in the straw. Let's see if we can get some oak seedlings in the spring.
Please take this into consideration when decorating for the holidays!
In response to the continuing rise of COVID-19 cases across the state, DCNR has canceled all in-person events and programs organized by its staff and volunteers in all state parks, beginning Sunday, December 6. Learn more https://bit.ly/37CpdcD
