With so much division and negativity in the world right now, let’s take a break to share what we’re thankful for today. For me, it was my early-morning cup of tea, a sunny and warm October day, and seeing the beautiful leaves beginning to change color. Now, your turn!

Pink chocolate-covered sunflower seeds. That’s what I’m looking forward to today. I came across one of my favorite treats (in my favorite color) online over the weekend, and I debated about buying them. Did I really need them? No. Did I really want them? Yes. Sometimes self care looks like taking a walk or a bubble bath, or watching a funny movie. And other times it’s buying the things that bring us joy, like my pink chocolate-covered sunflower seeds.

I believe in positivity. I remind myself regularly that things could be worse, and I feel that helps me to have a practice of gratitiude. Yet, I read an essay recently that discussed how sometimes an individual just isn't able to muster a positive attitude--due to anxiety, fear, or even pain--and how we must try to keep the other's point of view in mind. As a therapist, I understand this perspective as I work with individuals regularly who are struggling and aren't able to see a silver lining, or just need to feel scared until they are able to feel better. I think it's important to remember that just because someone doesn't seem to be positive about whatever situation they find themselves in, it doesn't mean they aren't trying. They just might not be ready yet.

As the unofficial start of summer approaches in a few days with Memorial Day weekend, many people I've spoken with are feeing sad about what they are missing out on this year. I get it, as I have my moments of feeling that way, too. I think it's important--especially during those moments--to remember what we are able to do, and what we are grateful for. It's also important to know that we aren't alone in having those feelings. While many things are out of our control, we can choose to focus on what we can do within our control to make the most of each day.

I don't know about you, but the limitations of social distancing have caused me to realize how much I have truly taken for granted. Instead of focusing on what I'm missing out on right now, I try to identify what I'm grateful for each day. I'm thankful to still have the freedom to go outside and enjoy the fresh air while taking a walk. I'm thankful to be able to work virtually so that I can be there for my clients during these difficult times. And I'm so thankful for technology that allows us to see and spend time with our family and friends even when we can't be within six feet of them. Sometimes all we can control is our attitude, so I'm doing my best to have the most positive one that I can right now.

Due to the need for increased social distancing at this critical time, I will conduct all sessions virtually for the next two weeks. I am extremely thankful to be in a profession where I can still do my job and offer support at a safe distance.
