Marriage and Feelings In any relationship, there will be frightening spells in which feelings of love may dry up. And when that happens you must remember that the essence of marriage is that it is a covenant, a commitment, a promise of future love. We should adopt the attitude of Jesus of whom the writer of Hebrews said: who, for the joy that was set before him, he endured the cross and despised the shame (Heb. 12:2). So, what is expected of us? Despite your lack of fe...eling, we will thrive to honor the covenant; and in the process, God will supply that which is lacking. You may not feel tender, sympathetic, and eager to please, but in your actions you must BE tender, understanding, forgiving and helpful. And, if you do that, as time goes on you will not only get through the dry spells, but they will become less frequent, and you will become more constant in your feelings as the relationship becomes more concrete and more meaningful. This is what can happen when you decide to love. Remember, Jesus loved us when we were unlovable, and he died for us when we were yet sinners; who, for joy that was set before Him, he endured the cross and despised the shame (Heb. 12:2). In contrast with our culture, the Bible teaches that the essence of marriage is a sacrificial commitment--one to the other, but the heavier responsibility rests with the husband (Eph. 5:25). Traditional societies made the family the ultimate value in life; and so, marriage was a mere transaction that protected the family's interest. By contrast, contemporary Western societies make the individual's happiness the ultimate objective; and so, marriage becomes primarily an experience of romantic fulfillment. But the Bible sees GOD as the supreme good - not the individual; and that gives us a view of marriage that intimately unites feelings AND duty, passion AND promise, because at the heart of the Biblical idea of marriage is the covenant between man and God. elliot j harrigan
