This is the Plank House a historic site in Marcus Hook. It was owned by Blackbeard's Mistress and he would come and see her when he was in town. This place is h...aunted and when I mentioned this to the owner his words were, looking me directly in the eye "It is haunted". He told me he will not go in the house after dark or stay in there after dark. The owner is the President of the Marcus Hook Preservation Society. I was in the right place at the right time on this one (earlier this morning) that the owner was willing to drive over and meet me to let me in. A friend of his was walking by and saw me outside taking pictures and we struck up a conversation and he informed that the owner is a friend of his so he called him up and the owner was ever so gracious to come down, meet me and let me into the Plank House. He was so knowledgeable about every nook and cranny in this place. As you can clearly see, it is being fixed up. The owner has a few grants right now but only for the roof and one of the walls. He said this place needs publicity. He said to contact him and make an appointment and try and get a group of people to take a tour. He is ever so willing to let people see the place. I told him I would consider doing that. If you are local in Delco and are interested, let me know. There is a ton of history here and the owner is a walking encyclopedia on it. I was amazed. I thanked him for his time and allowing me to go into this historic place and take photos. Take note that the items in the glass case are artifacts found in the house. PS - he had no problem with me posting pictures of it either, as I told him that I was going to and mentioned this group to him. The owner is more than willing to explain every detail about all the stuff in this historic house and I believe he is a member of this group. See more

Several months ago, I published the following story about the Hewes Mansion, formerly in Marcus Hook. Recently, Sylvia Gibson shared this old photo of the Mans...ion, so I am resharing the story again. Thank you, Sylvia! WILLIAM HEWES of Chichester, mason, Member of Assembly, had a plantation on the Delaware River in Marcus Hook, PA, on land he probably inherited from his father. Early maps show land owned by his wife’s family, Bezer, adjoining Hewes land in Marcus Hook, PA. He either built a mansion or added on to a preexisting structure. The house was a large, threestory brick structure with dormers and a porch the length of the front. Local lore has it that above the door was carved the initials WHM, which stood for William Hewes and wife Mary. Through the years the property passed through many owners, and in 1896 was bought by a local showman named Thomas Hargreaves. He named the plantation Lindenthorpe, for the many Linden trees that grew on the land. For five years Hargreaves staged great country fairs each summer of the plantation grounds. In those days a trolley ran from Chester down along the river to Marcus Hook, and for a nickel thousands rode the trolley to the fairgrounds. In 1901 Hargreaves sold the land to Joseph Pew, who started Sun Oil Company. The Hewes mansion served as Sun Oil’s first headquarters and was torn down in 1956.
