The survey area with six square kilometers in extent has been clustered into two units. Out of six grid units, two grids cover Bopitiya area and four grids cover Panthiya and Nehinna areas. All grids are belonged to Kalutara district of Western province and fall within Mathugama.
The presence of several abandoned pits mainly at two locations indicates that the area has been mined for Graphite in earlier period. According to the local inhabitants, considerable reserves of Graphite may still exist as most of the mines were abandon after World War II.
