Glutathione and Meniere’s: Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes spontaneous episodes of vertigo a sensation of a spinning motion along with fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and sometimes a feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear. Although the cause is unknown, oxidative stress plays a role. A significant decrease in both plasma and lymphocyte ratio reduced glutathione (GSH) vs. oxidized glutathione (GSSG) was observed.... Patients were divided into three groups (control, conventional therapy, and antioxidant treatment), and those in the antioxidant treatment group, especially those with Ménière's syndrome, demonstrated a net and more significant improvement. Several scientific papers show that increased oxidative stress due to production of excessive amounts of free radicals derived from oxygen and nitrogen, and acute and/or chronic inflammation produced by diverse groups of agents such as high intensity noise, vibration, cisplatin, gentamicin, aging, and Meniere’s diseaseare major factors in the initiation and progression of hearing disorders. Besides well-characterized antioxidantssuch as vitamin A, carotenoids, vitamin C, and vitamin Eother antioxidants are also important in protecting against cellular damage in the ear, including coenzyme and glutathione. However, oral supplementation with glutathione failed to significantly increase plasma levels of glutathione in human subjects, suggesting that this tripeptide is completely hydrolyzed in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Glutathione and Chemobrain: For years, cancer patients have complained about a phenomenon known as chemobrain, or chemotherapy-associated cognitive dysfunction. Chemobrain is characterized by memory, concentration, and attention problems, including a general feeling of mental fogginess. Because chemotherapy does not pass the blood-brain barrier, these complaints were initially dismissed. As the number of cancer survivors reporting this phenomenon has grown, so too has the ...body of research. Inflammation, oxidative stress, toxicity, and low brain levels of GSH are implicated in cognitive dysfunction. Chemotherapy can improve prospects for long-term survival after a cancer diagnosis, but it may also be associated with long-term toxicity, including the possibility of cognitive dysfunction. Glutathione and Mitochondria: Mitochondria are the energy stations of the cell- they produce ATP, which is the cellular currency for energy. ATP is used for metabolism, biosynthesis, motility, and cell division. ATP is also important in cell signaling and in DNA/RNA synthesis. Keeping mitochondria in good shape is essential for health and energy. The problem is, mitochondria are highly susceptible to oxidative damage.
