World Autism Day is an annual observation and occurs on April 2, 2021. This year marks the fourteenth annual observance. The United Nations (UN) is holding a virtual event in 2021 and will address challenges that individuals with autism face in society and in the work place. They will include guest speakers on the autism spectrum who have experienced personal challenges in the work place, employment market, and in society. Autism spectrum disorder encompasses a wide array ...of conditions and statistically affects an estimated 1 in 54 children, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Autism can be characterized by some of the following; repetitive behaviors, challenges with social skills, challenges with speech, or nonverbal. These are a few of the characteristics that may present with autism. There is a wide spectrum of characteristics and subtypes where you may see individuals with autism present differently than others diagnosed. Autism can be linked to both environmental factors and genetic factors or can be a combination of the two. Typically, a child will show signs of autism by the age of two or three. It can be diagnosed earlier as parents may note some developmental delays. Early detection and intervention can lead to positive outcomes later in life. The disability laws and resources vary in different countries. In the United States, those with autism are protected by the Americans with Disabilities Act. There are many events held throughout the United States on World Autism Day to help bring awareness to autism and help people find resources. In 2021 the majority of events are virtual due to COVID-19, which has brought its own challenges to those with disabilities. Awareness is the key to understanding those with autism and the challenges they face. Congratulations to Gerayne Yelkin, our 2020 National Caregiver of the Year and recipient of this year’s John Doc Langley National Caregiver of Year award! Gerayne has been a nurse for more than five decades and has spent 28 of those years caring for her patient, Josie Moore. Josie was a victim of a spinal injury during birth, which resulted in her being ventilator-dependent and quadriplegic.
