Mayers Well Drilling 06.02.2021

Welcome to the March 2019 issue of the Water Well Journal from the National Ground Water Association focusing on #pumping systems. The issue features WWJ’s ann...ual pumps directory. The 2019 Pumps Directory is where you can access complete contact information for the industry’s pump manufacturers. It also features an easy-to-read grid detailing and checking off the types of pumps each manufacturer produces. Simply put, the directory is a must-read before you make your next purchase. Most groundwater professionals installing pump systems know the merits of a variable frequency drive, but the cover story Protecting Motors goes into detail how to protect motors from the potentially harmful effects of pulse width modulated (PWM) waveforms, which are inherent in energy efficient VFD-controlled pumping systems. Patrick Hogg of Nidec walks readers through how drives work and how best to protect motors by taking a systematic approach. He states achieving a long-running pumping solution can be done when the motor and VFD are looked upon as a single system. Grounding back the motor to the drive, and having the wire, conduit, and filter correctly sized can lead to a variable speed drive system operating according to specification. While VFDs are relatively new to the groundwater pumping industry, freelance writer William Wagner authored a feature article about a method that has been around for more than 100 years. In Still Going, he covers windmills and how they are a reliable source for providing water to homeowners, ranchers, and farmers and won’t be going anywhere in the near future. Wagner talks to industry professionals working for a windmill manufacturer as well as an installer. They point out the beauty of windmills is in their simplicity. Windmills are systems that usually need checked just once a year with all of their components housed neatly together, making them a reliable source in a world asking more and more for clean energy. The latest Drawing from the Well column is titled Dealing with Flowing Wells. Columnist Gary Shawver, MGWC, stresses the importance of preplanning for groundwater professionals who work in areas where flowing wells can occur. Along with pointing out the need to check existing records of wells near the jobsite and having a plan for worst-case scenario events, Shawver provides information about some of the jobsite practices his crew has used. Among them were setting temporary casing ranging from 15 feet to 30 feet in depth. The depth depended on where crews found a zone of stiff clay. He also notes his crews usually used neat cement grout because of its set strength. The monthly installment of the #Safety Matters column by Alexandra Walsh is titled Ignoring Ergonomics Can Be Costly. In it, Walsh explains how ergonomics, designing a job for an employee instead of forcing an employee’s body to fit the job, is critical to business owners. She points out work-related musculoskeletal disorders cost $15 billion to $20 billion a year. She adds that Bureau of Labor statistics indicate ergonomic-related injuries account for one-third of cases involving days away from work and that employees suffering from ergonomics-related injuries required more time off the job on average (11 days) than those with other types of workplace injuries and illnesses (eight days). Walsh then describes in detail OSHA requirements, how to identify problems, utilize injury reports, and finally, how to put ergonomics to work for your business.
