To celebrate Michael Baker's Founding Month and how our legacy continues to build with each project, Ed Smail, Project Manager - Environmental, from our Charleston, South Carolina, office, shares some of the exciting challenges of his work in our Environmental Practice.

We teamed with our long-standing partner of 30 years, the Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority (PWSA), to devise an inspection process to locate and identify service line pipe materials within its service area that may lead to elevated levels of lead contamination. Our team leveraged diverse office and field skill sets, including surveying, GIS and website hosting, to inspect 15,000 curb boxes over a 12-month period, resulting in 1,250 inspections per month through all seasons. The American Planning Association celebrates the role that planning plays in creating great communities each October with National Community Planning Month. Michael Baker provided comprehensive engineering services and designed rehabilitation measures for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Statewide Dam Safety program. In total, our team worked on 10 dams across the state, delivering projects at or below budget, while mitigating some of the most serious deterioration hazards and protecting homeowners downstream of the dams. One of Michael Baker's signature projects, the Lake Bridges Over Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, is this month's National Steel Bridge Alliance's featured project. It was part of the U.S. 68/KY 80 corridor widening effort by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and brought the state closer to the long-term goal of having a four-lane, east-west highway in the southern portion of Kentucky. The basket handle, tiered-arch design of the twin bridges is the first of its kind in Kentucky, forming signature gateways at the eastern and western entrances to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.
