Mckinley Schoolhouse

Plant it and they will come. In the summer of 2018, with the help of the township’s Street Department fellows and Community Life Church, we removed the old yews at the front of the schoolhouse and replaced them with gardens that would feed our native wildlife. The swamp milkweed brought monarch butterflies this summer that nectared on the milkweed blossoms then laid their eggs on the milkweed leaves. Hatched monarch caterpillars fed on the leaves and then when ready, made their chrysalides which several weeks later eclosed into Monarch butterflies, which then nectared on the blossoms of the remaining milkweed and also other native plants in the gardens. Many bees and other insects have been observed in the gardens as well. Note the chrysalis attached at the top of the front door!

The Schoolhouse will be open on Saturday from 3-7 PM during Chippewa Township Community Day!

These sweet young ladies volunteered to read McGuffey Readers and teach visitors how to use the hoop and stick game. It does our hearts good to see these young ones giving up their Saturday to give back to their community. Many thanks to Charlotte, Paige and Maddy, and to their parents for understanding the importance of volunteering.
