THE PSFS BUILDING Anyone familiar with downtown Philadelphia is likely equally familiar with the famous PSFS Building, now operating as the upscale Loews Hotel. Anyone who has laid eyes on the Philadelphia skyline in the past 88 years has seen it - the glinting, gleaming building is made all the more iconic by the red neon lettering on its roof. Architects William Lescaze and George Howe built the ground-breaking structure at the corner of 12th and Market streets in 193...2, having been commissioned by the Philadelphia Savings Fund Society. While the skyscraper was completed during the Great Depression, the neon initials of the Philadelphia Saving Fund Society were kept lit throughout the economic troubles to create a symbol of hope and consistency for the city. At the time, its observation deck was one of the only places people could get a glimpse of their city from above. So what does any of this have to do with HVAC? The PSFS Building also pioneered central air-conditioning. The Carrier Engineering Corporation was contracted to install air conditioning inside the building, making it only the second air-conditioned high-rise in the United States. In fact, the technology was so advanced in the eyes of the general public that employees working in the building were initially scared that the A/C would make them sick from always being cold. Luckily, the cool comfort they found there quickly resolved any reservations they had about its benefits. #fridayfunfact #hvacfact #hvac #philadelphia #phillypride #gobirds #meadehvac

DECREASING INDOOR HUMIDITY LEVELS High humidity is a common summer issue. However, you can experience high humidity issues in the winter as well. If you have high humidity, you will likely notice condensation around your home, mostly near windows. If this is something your home suffers from, the professionals at Meade HVAC can help. Health Benefits... If you have high humidity levels in your home, finding ways to remove moisture can provide you with a few benefits. The main one is comfort. When you decrease the humidity in your home, sweat will be able to evaporate off of your body more easily. Then you can be cool and comfortable rather than sticky and clammy. Another benefit is reducing allergy and asthma symptoms. As mentioned before, humidity attracts mold and mildew growth. By keeping your humidity levels in check, you can help avoid the mold and mildew spores that are aggravating your respiratory issues. Finally, decreasing humidity can also help you avoid heat strokes and overheating. Keeping humidity levels low allows you to breathe better and cool yourself with sweat. This way you don’t have to deal with the consequences of heat exhaustion. Household Benefits By decreasing humidity in your home, you can help protect it. High humidity issues like mold, mildew, and warping can damage your property. Water vapor can also travel through walls and ceilings, causing wet insulation, peeling paint, and rot in woodwork. Once your property is damaged, it can be difficult and expensive to fix or replace. Therefore, it makes sense to pay attention to the humidity in your home and protect your home before it gets damaged. This way you can save your hard-earned money and invest in improving your home in other ways. If the humidity in your home is too high, here are some ways you can decrease the amount of moisture in the air: -Turn off your humidifier -Invest in a dehumidifier -Use exhaust fans -Reduce water use in your home -Use an energy recovery ventilator Visit www.meadehvac.com to learn more and schedule an appointment, or give us a call at 610-458-8706 any time 24/7 to speak with one of our experts. #wednesdaywisdom #hvactips #DIYhvac #humidity #meadehvac

FOR FANS OF FANS ONLY! The Fan Museum, which opened in 1991, is the world's first museum dedicated to the preservation and display of hand fans. It is located within two houses that were built in 1721 within the Greenwich World Heritage Site in southeast London, England. Along with the museum, there is an orangery decorated with murals, a Japanese-style garden with a fan-shaped parterre, a pond, and a stream. The museum owns over 4,000 fans, fan leaves, and related ephe...mera. The oldest fan in the collection dates from the 10th century and the collection of 18th and 19th-century European fans is extensive. The entire collection is not displayed permanently due to conservation concerns, so three times a year the selection of fans on exhibit is changed. There is also a permanent educational display which teaches about fan history, manufacturing processes, and the various forms of fans. Operated by an independent charitable trust, the museum has received financial support from the London Tourist Board, English Heritage, the National Art Collections Fund, the Foundation for Sports and the Arts, The Heritage of London Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund, and from many corporate and individual supporters. I guess there’s a lot of fans of fans across the pond! While The Fan Museum in Greenwich may have been the first museum dedicated to the history of fans, it’s not the only one there is. In fact, there are similar fan museums in Paris, California and Indiana. #fridayfunfact #hvacfact #hvac #fans #meadehvac

HOW A/C CHANGED THE US GOVERNMENT There's not much that air conditioning hasn't changed about US culture over the past 120 years. In fact, even our government wouldn't be the same without it. Many historians have credited the invention of A/C as a major catalyst for the expansion and evolution of America's federal bureaucracy throughout the 20th century. Why? Before indoor cooling was a thing, lawmakers were virtually unable to congregate productively during the hottest t...imes of year, as soaring temperatures indoors made for insufferable and often dangerous conditions. This meant getting a lot less done and making way fewer decisions. With the invention and installation of modern A/C in government buildings, however, lawmakers were able to stay in session longer and get more done (though their overall productivity is still questionable at times). PS. For any libertarians out there, don't blame air conditioning for big government. It was only trying to help! #fridayfunfact #coolhistory #hvacfact #meadehvac

Which HVAC System is Right For You? Determining the right system is a combination of mathematics, skill, and experience. Go too small and your system will overwork, reducing its lifespan. Go too big and you’ve overspent on a system that isn’t properly sized. Meade prides itself on finding the right system for you every time, so here are three steps to help you get started: Step 1: Get a virtual or in-Person Estimate ... We provide comprehensive in-home estimates that involve home size and load calculations. We also analyze probable air flow throughout your house. This helps us identify the ideal system for your needs. If you would prefer to maintain quarantine distance we can arrange for a virtual walk-through of your home using common technology like FaceTime and Zoom. Step 2: Approve Your System and Comfort Add-Ons Based on our estimates we will give you our best recommendations on what we think is most efficient for your home. You’ll also have the chance to add any additional accessories or systems that you think would be useful. For example: smart home thermostats or air scrubber technology. Step 3: Schedule Your Minimum Contact Installation! Our team maintains enhanced sterilization and social distancing standards when conducting our installations. We will reduce our contact with your family and your home to just the essentials as we complete our work. You’ll be surprised at how efficient and clean we can be! SIPPIN' LIKE AN EGYPTIAN Ever wonder how the ancient Egyptians kept their drinks cold? Neither have we... ... Because we know exactly how they did it, because we're cooling experts. While there wasn't an abundance of ice or snow to go around in ancient Egypt, the Egyptians got creative and used some pretty high level thinking to chill their beverages. And by high level thinking, we mean they would leave drinks out on their rooftops overnight. Sounds primitive, but doing so took advantage of the stark drop in desert temperatures overnight, keeping their liquids a few degrees cooler for the hot day to come. So... now you know that. You're welcome! #fridayfunfact #coolhistory #hvacfacts #meadehvac
