Pastor Tim’s Devotion for Monday June 7, 2021 What is Normal? God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. -Psalm 46:1... The dictionary definition of normal is the usual, average, or typical state or condition. There’s a lot of talk about going back to MORE normal.whatever that is. The truth of the matter is that even if there had not been a pandemic that everything changes all the time any way and that what is considered to be normal is constantly changing. Things certainly aren’t normal if you compare them to the way things were when I was growing up in the 1950’s and 60’s. When was the last time you heard someone say, I’ll bring the car around, or I’ll show you to the door. ? If you said that today people would look at you like you were from another planet. My dear friend Karen Hirshon who plays in our Rustical Quality String Band was born Karen Smith and grew up on Normal Avenue in Normal, Illinois. When she was old enough to drink everybody thought her id card was fake. I guess being normal can cause problems sometimes. Nevertheless I am sure that all of us would welcome something, anything that might look like sort of or resemble anything close to normal after the past 14 unbelievable, terrifying, confusing, horrible, deadly, bizarre, ridiculous and hopefully never to be seen ever ever again months that we all just experienced. What was BECOMING normal was something that was definitely not something we wanted. I certainly hope that you all are experiencing better days and can enjoy the Summer and that the world can be a happier place once again. In any event, we know always that there will be challenges ahead. In a very real way life is a lot like that old saying about the weather: if you don’t like the weather around here just stick around and it will soon change. Joe Paterno always said that when we are basking in success, disaster is right around the corner. He used to say that the team is never quite as good as they look when they win nor are they quite as bad as they look when they lose. My prayer ii for you that whatever the days ahead hold that you know God’s loving presence there. Also, just maybe, God willing, we can enjoy life a little this Summer O God Our Help in Ages Past music by William Croft and words by Isaac Watts https://youtu.be/N-hN740J6qA

Pastor Tim’s Daily Message Tuesday October 27, 2020 The Journey... Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. -Psalm 119:105 The turtle in the photograph accompanying this message is on a journey across my back yard. It takes me a minute to do that. It takes him a lot longer. Everybody moves at their own pace and it sure seems like everybody’s journey has slowed down in 2020 and we are all now sort of creepy crawling into Winter worried about the damn-demic, kind of going forward but slowly and keeping our heads low to the ground. In a way things have sort of kind of got more normal with more things going on than there was in the Spring and early Summer. And yet there seems to be a dread about flu season and what is going to happen over the Winer as cases rise. We might do well to take a lesson from the turtle and just slow down. One day at a time Sweet Jesus. As the saying goes, just because you are over the pandemic doesn’t mean the pandemic is over. Wherever and whenever we go, we can be assured God is with us and loves us and will never abandon nor forsake us. Yes, I know..if God loves us so much why do we have covid? Well, I don’t know the answer to that but I do know that we would be wise and better off to trust in God and not ourselves, to trust in the power and peace of God in every time, especially in troubled times. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight. -Proverbs 3: 5-6 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with My righteous right hand. -Isaiah 41: 10 It seems like we used to go faster and farther and the endless pandemic goes on and on. Eventually the turtle made it across the yard after what seemed like an eternity. But he got there. I think that’s the attitude we are going to have to take about the upcoming Winter. One day at a time Sweet Jesus. I sang the song with that title a lot in the Spring and I think it’s a good time to sing it again. Here it is. God bless you. One Day at a Time by Marijohn Wilkin and Kris Kristofferson sung by Pastor Tim Craven https://youtu.be/5NRPXzhrIOY

Today, we invite you to attend the 2021 ELCA World Hunger Leadership Gathering. ... This signature event gathers ELCA World Hunger’s leaders for a time of networking, idea sharing, learning and planning for our shared ministry to address hunger and its root causes in our local and global communities. Next year's event, January 20 through 23, we will center on John 6:11-12 and the theme And All Were Satisfied. For the first time in the event’s history, we will gather virtually! We celebrate the new opportunities this gathering brings, including the chance to welcome more participants than ever before. As we look forward, we know that our future church is younger and more diverse; who do you want to invite to be part of the conversation and our ministry together? To register, please visit bit.ly/2021WHLG. The event fee is $20, with sponsorship opportunities available to those for whom the cost would be a barrier to attending.
