Global evidence continues to demonstrate that midwives save lives when educated, integrated, and provided resources to manage childbearing families. Laerdal, a... major international manufacturing company for maternal, newborn simulators set out to aid in training competent midwives in under resourced countries called the 50,000 Happy Birthdays project. In our three countries, more than 18,500 midwives and other health care providers have been trained to improve management of birth asphyxia, newborn prematurity, post-partum hemorrhage, and eclampsia. Across the project implementation sites, internal project data indicated a 26% reduction in stillbirth rates in Ethiopia, a 57% reduction in newborn deaths in Rwanda, and a 33% reduction in maternal deaths in Tanzania. How? Pre-service training Training of educators, tutors & lab technicians Equipping skill laboratories with simulators Scheduling of short frequent skill practice sessions Improved student confidence prior to clinical practice Topics aligned with existing curricula Improved teaching methodology Simulation and competency-based methods What happened in Rwanda? Women who died from bleeding after birth decreased from 7.2% to 3.4% at implementation sites (health facilities) Women who died from eclampsia reduced from 3.6% to 0% Newborn deaths from birth asphyxia decreased from 20.1% to 17.4% Stillbirths decreased from 1.4% to 1.2% https://www.devex.com//opinion-what-we-learned-from-the-50 #GrowMidwives #ScaleUpandSustainMidwifery #2020yearofthemidwife

It’s time nationally certified midwives across the country are recognized as integral to improved outcomes and treated as knowledgeable colleagues. People seeking midwifery care need access to midwives in all settings: offices, hospitals, birth centers, homes, mobile clinics, universities, labs, and more. Midwives need access to health systems so that we can coordinate, refer, and consult for care seemlessly with physicians, nurses, therapists, and social workers, among others.
