Mold and Moisture. Related? So it's that time of year where humidity, moisture, and weather are in high gear this time of year. It is something that needs to be looked at, evaluated, and taken care of. If left untouched and untreated, mold will grow. Here are a few things you can do in order to help combat this type of thing.... Unfinished basement? Monitor your walls. You can purchase Drylock paint that helps seal up your walls from the inside. Before applying any paint, you want to make sure they are clean and free of dust/debris. Of course you will want to wear a mask or a respirator prior to using any harsh chemicals or paints Dehumidifiers. You want one with a decent "Pint Size" and you may need a couple for very large basements or basements with multiple rooms. Gutters. What? We're talking about inside my basement! I know, but the water/moisture is coming from outside, right? Check your gutters. If downspouts are dumping right against your basement walls/foundation, then that’s a bad thing. You want to have that water dump about 5 feet away from the walls, preferably down hill if possible. Grading of dirt. Yep, your dirt can help too. You want your dirt to flow down hill AWAY from your foundation walls. They say an inch for every foot is great slope for the first 10 feet (i.e. if you walk 10 feet away from your foundation wall, you'll be 10 inches lower than at the base of your foundation walls). These are some of the many tips you can do to help your basement. If problems are more serious, (i.e. what's in my pictures), then you may want to call a Foundation Contractor or a Waterproofing Contractor (of course licensed) to give you different options available to your home.
