You’ve been here before. Years ago, knowing that you had reached obesity, you made the choice to lose weight. Maybe you decided on gastric bypass surgery. Maybe you went to a retreat or bootcamp. ... And when it was all over, you came out of your experiences thinner and healthier. At that time, you felt amazing in your body and how far you’d come. But over time, the weight came back. You might have fallen back into old habits, or you weren’t sure how to keep up the intensity that you experienced at a retreat. Maybe after you reached your goal, you thought that would be all you had to do. And now you’re back in the place where you’ve started, and you don’t want anyone to know that you’ve regained the weight you lost. You won’t talk to friends that you made during your journey. You won’t talk to old coaches or family members that were so excited to see you getting healthier. In a way, you’ve shut the door on the life that you started to see that you could have because you’re embarrassed, disappointed, and ashamed of what happened. But you didn’t gain that all back for any reason that you’ve concocted in your head. The ONLY reason that you’re back here is because you didn’t have the support that you needed to stay healthy the first time. You were released into the world without the mental foundation and skills to know how to maintain your weight. No one was there to guide you on healthy coping mechanisms that didn’t lead you to the fridge, or how to exercise on your own, OR how to handle stress in a way that didn’t resort to binge eating. You’ve never told anyone this but... You’re a closet eater. You might have announced on Facebook or in person to your family and friends that you made the commitment to lose weight. So many people congratulated you, told you how proud they were, and asked questions. You were surrounded by others encouraging you and wanting to know how your weight loss was going.... But, for one reason or another, you didn’t hit your goals. You didn’t want to admit that to your friends or family. In your eyes, it was embarrassing. So you kept going with the idea that you were eating fruits and veggies, exercising during the week, and doing better and better. Meanwhile, you ate when no one was looking. You snuck into your car and drove to a gas station, or a fast food joint, or an ice cream shop. When you were alone you shoved it all down as fast as you could: junk food, pizza, ice cream, french fries. And then you threw it away in a trash can where no one would know that it was you who had eaten it. We get how not reaching your goals can feel isolating and shameful. But it isn’t! You didn’t reach your goals because you didn’t have the guidance that you needed. Despite having people encourage you left and right, you didn’t have a real support system. And you might have been doing this all on your own, without a professional coach to tell you how to avoid these binge eating sessions. What’s your story? At some point you’ve looked at yourself in the mirror and wondered, How did I get here? Or maybe you’re someone who once looked at those significantly overweight and asked yourself, How does anyone get to that point? Why haven’t they done anything to stop it before they got to that point?... We know you didn’t get here because you were careless. You didn’t purposefully neglect your health or didn’t pay attention to what was happening to you. You noticed the progressive weight gain. It didn’t happen all at once; it gradually accumulated over the years. What other people might not realize, or what you might not share with others, is that you saw what was happening and recognized your body changing. But your weight gain didn’t compare to what you were going through at the time, did it? We know that for some of you to get to this point that you carry pain with you. You bear the metaphorical scars of trauma that you might not even speak out loud. You may have lost a spouse, parent, or siblings. Maybe you lost more than one person. Maybe you suffered abuse and assault. Or experienced an injury or illness leaving you immobilized for a long period of time. Or were cheated on by your partner. Or struggling to navigate postpartum depression and anxiety. That is some deep stuff to work through. At moksha, we’ve heard these stories from our clients. When they come to us, they often share their stories as they dig deep into themselves to find their motivation and WHY. All of them have suffered in some way or another. And at the time, their pain was a far greater concern than the weight gain. We want you to know that you don’t have to carry that pain forever. What you went through to get you to this point does NOT define you. There are so many things that you can’t change, but you CAN free yourself from one thing: your weight. That’s what we’re here for. Who do you want to be on December 31st, 2021? You might think that it is WAY too soon for you to think about that. But humor us for a minute. What about an unhealthy lifestyle that you know is leading you down a self-destructive and dangerous path, but you aren’t sure how to get out of it?...
