Here’s something interesting happening in the lower end of the watershed. A more pedestrian-friendly atmosphere is always welcome! Get involved and have your input heard.

Great big THANKS to everyone that came out for our stream cleanup in Bath PA today. We had a great group, including volunteers from Bath Borough, Cub Scout Pack 33, and Trout Unlimited - Monocacy Chapter. We made a great dent in the trash and debris in and around the Monocacy Creek as it flows through the town. And the Mayor of Bath provided pizza for all the volunteers! What a great morning. Thanks again everyone!!!

Visit Burnside Plantation on Saturdays, May through November, for family and historic fun! Visitors will be able to learn more about the barns, buildings, and g...ardens that have been a part of the Moravian community since 1748. Kids will be able to discover the Colonial Garden and do a fun farm craft during their visit, such as Plot your Garden, Wind, Weather and Kites on May 15, and What Makes the Monocacy Creek Special on May 29. Learn more and check out the schedule: https://historicbethlehem.org/progra/saturdays-at-burnside/ See more

Here’s a neat old photo of kids playing in the Monocacy, in the early 1900’s. It’s hard to picture just where this might be - looks like a tributary branch entering the Creek in the foreground.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! From our friends at the Bethlehem Environmental Advisory Council comes this call for help planting trees this coming Saturday, May 8th at 9am, at Saucon Park: We need volunteers to help the Bethlehem City Forester with planting tree saplings in Saucon Park! We have about 600 to plant!!... I know this is short notice but he was only notified of they’re arrival today. They are PPL GRANT Saplings so they didn’t cost the city anything, but we do need help with plantings! What a timely event coordinated with our cities CAP! Please assist on Saturday May 8th at Saucon Park. Meet at the parking lot off Fire lane for 9am. I have included a picture of the lot and where we will be planting. Please wear sturdy footwear and bring a shovel! Thanks everyone!!

Tough one on the Jordan Creek....How many of you remember that a similar incident happened on our Monocacy Creek? Back in the summer of 1985, a truck full of liquid detergent spilled its load at the Center St. bridge (Rt. 512) in Bethlehem, near where Panera is today. The contaminant entered the stream in large volume, and killed most of the trout, suckers, and baitfish in the stream. It was a horrible time in the Monocacy. But the Monocacy’s own wild trout repopulated her, ...with the help of some wild trout fry from the Nancy Run Creek in Bethlehem Township, and today the Monocacy has the second best wild trout population per stream acre of all the streams and rivers in Pennsylvania. Be vigilant and be aware. These things can happen at any time. https://www.lehighvalleylive.com//jordan-creek-contaminati
